It is a simple design, and I've had one bike with that springer on it and it was pretty smooth, but by design as the fork compresses it forces the tire forward into the bump it is compressing for causing more stress and sacrificing some of it's ability to smooth out said bump. Forks that allow the wheel to move up (thus back based on head tube angle) are a better design to smoothness and durability.
