UPS measures your box with more than a dozen lasers. If your box is right at the size limit, but its sides are bulging — ka ching! — you'll get hit with the large-package fee.
Exactly why UPS sucks! I don't see how this site is helping anything besides helpful hints for the clueless! -Adam

I dunno, in 2005 I took a boxed 20" Columbia SS5 to the ups store in VA where I lived, and they wanted $118 to ship it to MO! :x FedEx was around $25! UPS is just so OCD about how flat the package is, if it pooches out at all-surcharge. And let's not forget how many classic bikes they've destroyed over the years with their careless employees! -Adam

I really do try to shop around, sometime USPO works and sometimes it don't and I have no other choice but UPS and if I have to use them I will, Fed Ex is not an option as they have no office here, I just try not to loose money, even though it happens once in a while.

$50 is the standard UPS charge for large packages. You don't want that, and neither do we. If your package is over the 130 dimensional limit, and it incurs the surcharge, EVEN IF IT IS RE-MEASURED AND ASSESSED DURING TRANSIT, UPS will bill us the extra $50, then we will have to BILL YOU the extra $50. Nobody wants that.

thats the part that gets me, they may remeasure it on the road and basically hold it for ransom for extra $$$ or just bill your credit card without you knowing about it
