We all here of the looming gov't shutdown which according to this website- http://www.stansberryresearch.com/pro/1 ... PSIM328/PR
will be the start of the end of america.(that vidio is super-long and kind of slow) :|

So if you had only ONE or TWO bikes what would they be.

Of course we've got spare parts covered..

Id have to say my 1947 huffman and my 1963/93 westport missile

What would you keep, since you can't likely pay for $6 to $10 a gallon gas????

I'd keep all 24 bikes, until they would get $1000 apiece in the new America, then I would sell half of them.

While I don't believe there will ever be an "end of America", it does seem perfectly plausible that we could see some of the current issues get worse. Many states are already dealing with budget problems and simply don't have the money in the right place to keep their roads and bridges in top shape. It certainly doesn't leave them much room to expand bicycle infrastructure (bike lanes, boxes at lights, bicycle awareness, etc). The middle east seems to be particularly unstable lately. It certainly wouldn't surprise me to see gas prices jump in the future, even if its simply a result of speculation. A large increase in fuel costs would certainly hit drivers at the pump, as well as at the store since a rise in transportation costs would likely affect almost all goods. I suppose a significant increase like that could spark an increase in bicycle traffic, especially for short distance commutes, going to the store, etc. Something like a touring bike would probably be ideal. Racks and paniers would be handy for carrying groceries and such. For shorter trips I imagine any bike would work equally well. Theft would be worth considering also, since its already an issue in many places. Dull looking older bikes would likely fair better than flashy newer ones. I suppose you could apply some sort of "urban camouflage" to make your bike less of a target. My two bikes would be my 1940's cargo trike which can carry a large load up to a few hundred pounds, and a 3 speed English style bike with racks and paniers for longer distances and lighter loads.

I think the Xtracycle is the way to go.

Wait wait wait lemme get this right... you hauled a couch with a bike? lol i bet that would draw some looks! Love to see that!

Yep, on the bike trailer towed by my bike. Next time i haul something huge I'll have to get a few pics or a video. I haul amazing things every day with it, furniture, appliances, bikes and bike parts, scrap to and from the yard, you name it I've hauled it. I have it behind my 24" Mosh BMX since I sold the bootlegger here but this will give you an idea of my daily routine.

It was surprisingly easy to pull home.

Dude I like the flatbed trailer! I might have to make one of those. I could haul a lot more stuff on that.

i say, PICS OR IT DIDNT HAPPEN! jk.

at this point i only have 2 complete bikes, so id have to keep them, my "always in the process of ratting out" early 70s huffy canti cruiser, and my electra boney finger. 8)

1) i cant believe i watched that video as long as i did. i thought he was tryin' to kinda help people. after maybe 15 minutes it looked like he was tryin' to sell something,so i shut it off.

2) i've been thinkin' about the same thing for about 20 years. i picture "the road warrior". i need a lot of ammo and gazoline.

3) yeah, i'm an idiot

Wow, you guys have summoned the beast with this one. :)

As a soft core doomer I've tossed this idea around for a while. The bad news is it wouln't be something I like.
In the doom-o-sphere the wally world mountain bike will reign supreme. Paved roads are coming to an end for one reason or another. A bike that can handle rough terrain will just be more useful. Commonality and abundance of parts help when supply chains end. Exotic Campy cranksets may be on permanent back order. Tires will be an issue, That's why I'm hanging on to the darn things as long as they don't rot.
Security will definetly be a problem, theft will be commom. The more you blend in the better.
This is where you must summon your Inner Rat, and make a crappy looking bike that no one will want, yet is mechanically sound.
Racks and trailers can be made from scraps of commercialism. I doubt if an ironing board is gonna' do anyone any good.

But this subject may harm the good nature of the this forum, I just hope it keeps up the civility, it is a good topic.

I did the exact same thing as soon as I noticed something may be for sale here.

I'm with you on the road warrior thing.

Well some federal offices closed today here in puerto rico because of lack of funds. Tomorrow morning is the day we all know if the government is closing down. I really hope they get all this mess taking care off, or next election day vote for all new candidates.

Back to the bikes, I currently own 3 bikes, was thinking on selling one but now I'm keeping all of them. Gas prices are crazy!
