There is a Sturmey Archer 8 speed X-RD8 (w) for sale on Trade Me and the listing says "needs repair has suspect broken tooth inside,i have not had it apart". Are these fixable? Are parts available? I did some searching online but have not found a supplier of service parts, so thought someone on here might know.

Any advice appreciated, thanks,

Glen.

biketoolsetc.com carries spares; might check there. Early runs of SA 8spds were lemons; i'd avoid buying used.

restodave - thanks for the link, don't know how I missed that in my searching

Bicycle808 - thanks for the tip. I did see in my searching quite a few posts on various sites about problems... perhaps I'll give it a miss.

Could it be stripped out I wonder and used as a single speed... or even on the front as a brake only? :39:

Cheers,

Glen.

I think that x-fd hubs, at about $65 each brand new, are your best bet for a front drum hub that'll work on pretty much any fork.... The rear drum's reaction arm affixes to the frame differently than the front hub's, for good reason...

PS- reading online accounts, it seems that the new 8speeds are solid, reliable hubs, but the early runs were suspect. As a result, sales were slow, and a lot of "new" stock may be from the older series... caveat emptor.
