The chemical method worked for me on some handle bars and seat post.
My local grocery store had muratic acid in the drain cleaner isle. Most hardware stores have got it as well.

Don't know what I'm doing, gonna do it anyway.
Acid or sand blasting are the only ways I'm aware of.
I bought a little backpack sand blaster on the bay for $30, can get a 7# bag of media at Lowe's for about $10.
I'm not sure what media you'd need though, probably glass. Not sure walnut shell would touch good chrome.
