I also posted this over on the CABE, but here is a '56-'57 JC Higgins I picked up from a CL listing yesterday.

I think i saw that thing...Awesome find-Cool plate

That plate is held on with a "police" embossed metal strap and a 'keeper' that is not supposed to be removed-not sure how I'm going to get it off to refurbish the bike without messing it up. This plate was from back when the police were serious about licencing bicycles. Does any city still do that?

Ooh-that's what I want this one to look like eventually. Are those painted fenders correct on mine? The orange paint doesn't match the tank and chainguard, although the lower fork leg has the same color on it.

hey jeep, welcome. i wanted that one, glad you got it. looks like a fun project. good score.

Yeah, it wasn't cheap, but it is exactly what I was looking for-plus I didn't have to drive far to go get it. Now I've got to stop buying bikes, and fix up the ones I already have. This one is already stripped down to the frame.

It is hard to say what is correct on the Higgins bikes. They mixed a lot of parts around. Im not one to be critical of other peoples bikes or say whats correct or incorrect. So I wont go there unless we PM as there are FAR to many people that are hyper critical :) I will say your fenders look the ones on my Monark (pics attached) Oh and my bike was in pretty bad shape when I got it although complete! All i did was clean a lot and mechanically make sure it was sound to ride And the price was rediculously next to nothing

Probably not. I didn't notice that on your Cabe post! But if you look at Banker's bike, you'll see the fat fender braces that wrap around the outside of the fenders. The 56-7's were the last JCH ballooners*, and were all decked out deluxe bikes. It's unlikely that any of them had painted fenders from the factory. (Of course, nothing's impossible!) *Sears apparently revived then name in the 80s, offering a rebadged (redecaled?) Murray Monterey. So, the 57s weren't the LAST last, just of the classic bike era. -Adam

On mine I cut the band with a pair of tin snips in the middle of the back behind the plate. Then drill a hole in both of the cut ends to secure it with a zip tie. The splice will only be visible when looking at it from the bottom and you get to keep the appearance of the original tag and strap.

I would just as soon not have them be the correct fenders-I'd rather have chrome ones-the less paint, the better. I have plenty of other bikes I can use those orange fenders on. While we're on the subject, I suppose that rear rack is not the right one either (even though I do like the look of it).

here's my jet flow with the original rack, minus the jewel.
