I picked up a literal truckload of bikes a while back. Then I picked up the worst case of food poisoning I have had in years. Not sure where it came from, but I was down and out for over two weeks!

So... I finally got to dig into some of the new toys this week. This was my first victim...err... build candidate.

A Coast to Coast Commander. A spacey frame, but a little boring in its current form.

I ditched the bars, stem and pukey white wheels for a future project. The fenders were nice, but I pulled them too. Goodbye tiny juvenile seat.

I have wanted to use my Ritchey Moby Bite slicks on a project for a while. I threw them on my crustiest wheels. I grabbed a short stem and some flipped bars from a Wal-mart Magna mountain bike. I mounted the seat as low and far to the rear as possible. I would like it a bit lower and further back.

A few minutes later and ...

Not bad for a quickie build. It's just a beginning, naturally. First I should try to figure out a headlight solution. Next I'm starting to look for some accessories. Perhaps some mirrors and a speedo.

I put the bike pictured above together a couple years back, and never really did anything much with it. I added a mirror and speedometer, but that was it. Took it on a few cruises, sure. Mostly a piece or bike sculpture, as it was massively difficult to ride. This spring I had the head tube shortened and refaced to accept a rat trap springer. I figure this is a better route than welding a longer tube. Then I got the itch to build a slightly more functional bike.

Here is the refaced tube and springer, which is currently flipped. I had a friend do the head tube, and he did a great job! Pardon quickie the pictures and unexciting backdrop.

This is a preliminary mock-up. I may go back to the original "Space Tracker" theme, but ditch the impossibly low seat. The Spaceliner rack stays! The tires are Carlisle Lightening Darts that I had just scrubbed up. Again, not sure they are staying. Basically they were cool and on hand. I have had the seat for a while. I have more builds in mind using this seat. Get used to seeing it.

I am pretty happy with the black, rusty red and dirty cream color scheme. The tires tires are a lot creamier in person. For some reason they kinda "pop" under a flash.

Man, this thing has patina an inch thick! I really like the shape of the chain guard.

I had to bend the rack braces quite a bit. The rack barely clears the rear tire. I'll have to cut the fender mount for aesthetics, but it doesn't touch the tire.
