I searched menards and home depot's websites and there are no results for copper wool, only steel and bronze.

Where do you source your copper wool from? Art Supply stores, Automotive shops?

pretty sure my local super market sells it but I have been cautioned in the past not to use it.
Alot of it is steel wool coated in copper so once the copper wears off your down to steel.

Is there an advantage of copper wool over bronze? Softer yet or what? Only thing we have in Grocery stores are Copper Scrubbing pads, not exactly wool.

I saw something here and heard from a guy I bought my firebolt from that it works great for removing surface rust. I believe it is softer and less scratchy.

being that steel wool comes in diffrent coarse ness you can get 0000 extra fine to I think #3 very coarse. The one thing I do like about the older shcwinns is they did know how to chrome. I use a #0 or #1 w/ windex to remove rust and 00 to shine w/ windex. I even used a wire wheel on my drill      and it worked fine ...this is done on the real or older chrome, some of this new stuff doesn't even seem like chrome
Thats my story and i'm stickin to ot... 8)

By the pound or truckload. Bulk may be cheaper.

I bought bulk Bronze wool years ago after it was recommended over steel.

Of course it is only going to be cheaper if you get a bunch of guys to chip in together. Then you have to consider shipping to a buch of guys factored in. Sounds like a can o' worms. Might work out for guys that belong to clubs though. Just a thought. Y'all do your own analysis.

It's for chrome fenders off my Firebolt. I will just try the extra fine steel wool.

Thanks everyone.

I still think steel wool is a no-no. Even extra fine steel wool seems to put a slight haze on chrome. My local Ace Hardware carries both solid copper and bronze wool, along with the coated varieties. If you can't find these, copper scouring pads work great. I generally buy "Pure Copper Chore Boy" or its generic equivalent. They should be available in any good grocery store, in the dish washing/cleaning supplies aisle. Ask you wife or girlfriend if you are fuzzy on where that aisle is.

These are what I get.

Additional non-bike use: use them to fill holes in your floors/walls, etc. so mice don't chew through. They apparently hate to chew copper. Worked in my old house. the few mice I have stay in the basement.
