Any creative ways to store bikes, making the most of your space?
I have more bikes then room and if I don't come up with something soon I will have to get rid of a few...dozen.
Ideas would be great. Thanks.

I have 2 methods to make the best use of limited space. I have a 1 car garage that must serve as my bike shop and hold all the extra stuff my wife accumulates. It's a battle. I put a 10' 2x4 along the rafters and added bike hooks every 14 inches, that holds about 9 bikes, but they can scratch each other and make it hard to take down and put up when they are close together. I also have a bunch of frames in the rafters, with the wheels and handlebars stacked up elsewhere. That frees up a little more space and it looks like I have 10 bikes, but there are 18 in there.

HighShip, Wildcats post is pretty much the norm for most of us. I sometimes turn the handlebars to the side and take off the pedals when I hang mine. It just gets things a little closer and gives room for another bike or two. I only do the hanging with non painted rims, the painted ones get scratched pretty easy everytime you get the bike down.

Also if you got a connection to get old bike boxes you could pull the pedal and handlebars and pack the bikes up until you ride them. I do this with a few of the bikes we don't ride too often. You can slide them along side of each other pretty close or if you're careful you could lay them flat and posibbly stack them a couple high in the rafters.

If I could only be as organized as steve...

I have bikes everywhere EXCEPT the garage (2 car garage... 1 race car, 1 broken car).

I think I might be able to clean things up in the basement soon though so i might start setting up shop there. My problem is I ride everyday and I like to ride different bikes everytime so they all need to be very accessible.

Thanks for the ideas. I guess I am doing pretty much what everyone else is doing. Most of my bikes are on a wall that is running perpindicular to the floor joist, so I have a hook every 16". Stagered in between, parked on the floor is more bikes. Peddals are not a problem but the handle bars are, even if i spin them some of them hit at. I like to display them so I don't really want to disassemble or anything like that. Well that settles it... I'm building a "shed". It will be a good place to put that wood stove, extra T.V., and dorm fridge I have kicken around.
Thanks Again. Still open to ideas too. Any "shed" type workshops out there I could check out for ideas?

I had a shed at my old house that I built specifically for storing bikes. I lag bolted a 2x4 to the roof rafters, and installed a hook every 9" or so. Was able to hang up parts bikes, and future projects without pedals and handlebars turned.

Here at the new place, I made two mobile racks that were designed to just barely fit under a door. Though loaded, they're very flex-y. I probably won't make any more.

How about a Cycle Tree from Harbor Freight? I have one and it works great! It has no problem holding 6 full sized bikes. The longest bike I could hang on mine is a Raleigh DL-1.

They're $49.99 and with a little searching you can find 20% off coupons. There was one in today's paper.

I like that mobile rack. if it was built out of steel would you like it better?
Yeah, that'd be the ticket! Despite lots of cross bracing, using screws and liquid nails, they still flex a lot, as I said. Trying to push that loaded one back inside after taking the pic was scary! -Adam

Highship, how big is your storage area? could you build a rack that would house bikes on top and bottom?

Mobil racks would be nice but have to have a smooth surface to roll them around on,
Adam, if you were to add a brace to the bottom of your it would keep it from flexing as much.

Actually, I did add one after the pic, and before I rolled it back inside! Plus, I needed something for the back tires to sit on since they don't hang straight down by gravity. -Adam

never mind the rack look at that colection of bikes!!
i knew i could count on RRB to help out. i like the stacked rack, feel a little silly though since thats what i see every time i walk through a department store with bikes and never thought about it.
i think i have the height. i will probably build mine out of wood.
