Well since I will be modding my frame ever so slightly I will be joining you all here in the ANYTHING GOES category so lets begin by throwing the rule book out the window. I am still going to keep my build somewhat within the traditional rules just out of pure nostalgia and it is out of sheer nesesity that I "bend the rules" a little. So lets begin shall we...

Here's my starting piece a ratty 1969 Western Flyer Fast One

My inspiration

StoneWoodsCook-71.jpg

I woke up early this morning and hit the ground running.
First act of business, as the general rule of thumb around here goes MO FATTA MO BETTA... and being inspired by a dragster a stingray slick is just not enough... so we need some more tire in there stat... but alas the 20x3 won't fit.

So what to do....Hmmmm Break out the old grinder and get to choppin' MAKE it fit!

Purists look away NOW!

Also the fork steer tube is a bit too short for the frame and I don't have a welder so if I can't make the fork longer make the frame shorter. Besides this big inch kinda hanging off is ugly. This will lower the front an inch but I got a plan here to get it back in the sky like an old gasser.

 Trick of the trade #43: When cutting a tube place a hose clamp around it and it gives you a guide to cut against.

Well that's it for now... got more building to do and we're burning daylight.

Re: Dark Horse II

Very cool start! Been waiting for this one to show up!
I think you are the first to wield the grinder in the build off, I wonder who will be the first to weld a bead?
Nice tip with the hose clamp...

Luke.

Re: Dark Horse II

I know that this one is gonna rock.
Good luck buddy!

Re: Dark Horse II

I've been looking forward to this one since you posted it in the talk thread! Good luck dude!

Re: Dark Horse II

More progress, the tire now fits with plenty of clearance.

I won't be needing these brake bosses on the triple tree fork so while I was at it I made them disappear.

First mock up and I like the way it's going.

I love the way the wheelie bar just hugs the rear tire. (This is why I did not want to cover it with a nanner seat)

And the other bar hugs the wheelie wheels!

PS sorry for the sideways photos this new Photobucket SUCKS! I used the photo editor, tried turning them on my computer, nothing works, so you will all just have to deal with it. If anyone knows how to solve it please clue me in.

Re: Dark Horse II

Thanks for the comments guys keep them coming. Here's the paint I'm going with, Duplicolor Metal specks blue.

Here's a test piece (old tank I had laying around)

I thought so too, I went ahead and called it a day because I had to go help a friend move some furniture because he just had his gal bladder removed and can't lift much right now and I went grocery shopping.

Luke.

Thanks, Tomorrow we start PHASE 2: Breaking bike down to frame for sanding and painting prep work, disassemble forks to paint fork legs, and cleaning and refurbishing of other parts.

Re: Dark Horse II

Good start. I hate when I get to spraying and need a little more paint and then
I used some at first on the test. Good luck

Don't say that, you'll put a hex on the whole thing... If I do run out I can always do a two tone or I can just go get another can. Normally speaking I have been able to paint a full bike frame and a smaller frame with one can and still have a bit to do small parts. (It covers really well with just a few coats)

Re: Dark Horse II

Cool start! Those drilled out drops on the rear are very close to an idea I had about doing a classic "gasser" style build where virtually any surface possible is drilled out to "save weight" like they used to do. Good luck!

Re: Dark Horse II

Ok today's progress:

FIrst off I am not running a fender or anything so these two little plate looking things had to go.

Removed the fork legs from the clamps

COLOR!
The pictures don't do it justice this color pops like an atom bomb.

Fork leg painted

Little assembly

I wanted to use this chain ring because it kinda mimics the look of the dragster's front wheels

First snag of the build, I got a master link from my LBS and it was a little too wide so I used another old link I had in my toolbox to take up the slack.

A little trimming of the fork legs and some jewelry to dangle off the stem

Re: Dark Horse II...NOW IN COLOR!
