Deer Hunting

Here is one of the guys in my bike club. He did a 12 mile bicycle deer hunt on it. You can have a loaded gun and hunt on a bicycle in Michigan. God bless America. I am going out again tomorrow to see if I can fined a buck. So far they have been too small the biggest was a 4 point.

I serviced a bike for a guy who keeps a fleet of late model front suspension mtbs up to deer camp. They use them to get further in.

He took some ripping at camp about not having a trailer. His solution is to go get help.

That happened on one of our group rides. I wasn't there but I heard about it. Deer seem to think you are another deer when you ride a bike in the woods. My son and I have had them run along side us on several occasions, usually two of them.

Here in South Jersey, hunting is very limited, so even in the dense suburban nonsense that I call home, we're kind of over-run with deer. (Wild Turkeys, too, but that just happened in the past five years or so. I used to have to go miles into the woods to see any turkeys; now they hang out in ppl's yards, and cause trouble by denting parked cars. Seems as though the Toms are trying to fight their reflection...)

So, yeah, I encounter deer all the time while riding trails, and I can see how a bicyle would be an advantage. I've never been able to "surprise" a deer while hiking, and motor vehicles seem to spook'm really quickly, but when I'm on my bike, it's like they don't hear me until they see me-- or, more likely, whatever they hear from my bike, they don't perceive as a threat. I've had deer begin to charge me and then run off the other direction, but most of them just crash thru the underbrush and scatter if I surprise them. Never had any deer try to run with me as I ride, which is probably b/c i ride too slow. Deer can run 35mph, and we never maintain any speeds anywhere near that on these trails, without a sustained downhill.

Horseback riding in the north woods this last Summer, saw a deer just off the trail maybe 30 feet from us. The deer just stood there, watching us. We stopped our horses and looked at the deer, I tried to take pictures, but the deer's natural camouflage and the dense woods made the animal impossible to photograph. Started walking the horses and the deer followed parallel to the trail for a while, then finally ran off. I really think the deer was curious what we were, big deer or what? Probably never saw people on horses or horses before, at least not that close.
A fascinating encounter.
