Derailleur + Shifters

Hey Folks,

Is it possible to use a friction shifter with a derailleur that came off of a set up that used index shifters? Not sure if there is such a thing as friction shifted deraillerus and index shifted derailleurs. Or does it even matter?

I've got an older cool friction shifter and a newer derailleur - would like to use the 2 together on a new build.

You should be fine. The indexing is only in the shifters with exception of the Shimano Positron system. http://www.sheldonbrown.com/gloss_p.html#positron
