What would be the cheapest way to use a electric motor on a 26 inch bike.

Hub motor in front or back wheel, about $350 + another $500 for a battery. Very easy to install, long lasting with minimal maintenance. With electric, the cost is nearly all up front. Try to mount your battery as low as possible, the batteries with a slide on mount can be attached to the side of a standard bike if you're not building a custom frame. Check out my 'Simply Red' build.
