Something else I'm working on...a faux oil tank panel with racing number!

Any ideas for a head badge, short of paying through the nose for the proper one?!?!

Working on a few ideas before the grands get here for the afternoon...

One of the old "hot rod" tricks I was saving for later in the build...in the early days of "gow jobs" and "jalopies", the racers would wrap their steering wheels in small diameter chord for increased grip. Here's ElgIndian's take on racer wrap...

With...

Without...

Any thoughts??

I like the way the cording looks, but it's hard to judge without seeing how it plays with the flow of the whole bike.

So this is white cord with about 6 coats of amber shellac. Different color cord and amount of coats determines your final color. Touch up is pretty easy as well. Uses a small brush to coat the area till it matches

Cool process!! Great look for a true rat. ElgIndian isn't quite that ratty, more "vintage racer"...maybe the NEXT build!!

I wondered if you would do an oil tank.

As far as headbadge, maybe you can use a dremel to cut one out of a piece of copper tubing or you could paint an Indian logo on.

Giving some thought to fabbing a number plate that would mount between the headtube and the upper and lower headset races and curve it to where the radius is a half inch or so larger than the headtube.

Excellent observation by Chief. Put your own twist on a head badge. I might add, get yourself a piece of copper or steel pipe of the right dimension, and cut a shape out of it. Then patina and paint your logo and rivet / screw it on to the head tube. Or just use a sheet of metal, anything to give the badge some 'relief'....

Thanks for all the input, guys!!

Here is where the badge/art will go...

Thinking about art on aluminum in the shape of the original...probably the Elgin "V" with an "I" or a couple feathers...or a head dress... Hmmmmmm...

Also I picked up a lens for the taillight...

They're calling for rain tomorrow. Maybe I can tinker a bit...

Opinion on the bars in place??

"Oil" panel is just resting in place. And the tank "may" get leather straps as I can't find what I'm looking for to make tank straps in metal...

Would the "new" tank/panel paint be too much with the "old" frame patina?

Keep in mind, I still have the chain guard to install....

some patina on the tank would be cool to match frame. I am really liking your build the one thing that keeps standing out to me is the newer stem, I usually just stay low on commenting(don't want to ruffle any feathers) but think a earlier stem like below would be cool to match your early style of build

The stem is older than the shape implies. It's probably late-30's/early-40's vintage...
