Re: Old Otasco Eliminator turned RAT!

Yeah.... The black looks good. Dont let him get to you. Although that "patina" was pretty sweet. Cool frame. And I dont really care for muscle bikes so that's saying a lot..

Re: Old Otasco Eliminator turned RAT!

Gaskill,
its my first rat build. i figured i would start out simple.
there are aesthetic values in rust patina, and thats cool. i like it too, but i didnt want it for this bike.
i do not think a rat has to be black......i did this frame that way because it makes sense to me.
its one of quite a few planned projects, each with a different style.

Re: Old Otasco Eliminator turned RAT!

i think its looking great. its got a mad max feel to it. i hope i didnt come off harsh about the paint. I'm use to critiquing art. And well i see these bikes as art, its hard for me not to. And i want to challenge people to step out of the box when it comes to vintage bikes. I mean the whole "rat" idea seems to be about originality but all i see is bikes buit the exact same way: white walls, red wheels, and flat black. Dont get me wrong i LOVE flat black. its just a bad-... color. But through this forum i've seen people sand away history to just make their bike look like the neighbors. I hope you dont see it as me going after your taste. I'm not trying, the bike is looking great, cant wait to see it rollin.

Re: Old Otasco Eliminator turned RAT!

Man,I didn't see it in the original pic but I really like what you are doing.I can't wait to see this one done.

i am very particular about the way my projects go. if you have seen my fixie project you can tell.

for this bike though, i really just wanted it to be mean looking, and if you are feeling mad max, i think i am on the right track.
i really wanted a simple bike i can cruise around the hood. this is the perfect bike for that.

what does everybody think about the chainguard? should i keep it on, or does it make the bike look too "finished"?
i am a little iffy about it.

BLINK!

Re: Old Otasco Eliminator turned RAT!

Looking good. I like the flat black paint but I also liked the patina. I think rat is in the eye of the builder. When I started my Dragoon I was thinking more along the lowrider lines but couldn't afford to rechrome everything. I think the chain guard is too unique to leave it off. It seems to pull the bike together. I am glad to see someone else building one of these bikes so I can compare what I am doing to your vision of the same bike.

Re: Old Otasco Eliminator turned RAT!

Looking good ...I always liked that frame desighn it was built by Murray starting in '68 or '69 cool bike back then especially in 5sp. form
with a console shifter and parking brake and wierd handlebars...sold to a few others in off brand names like yours...I keep my eyes open
to find one myself..

Re: Old Otasco Eliminator turned RAT!

thanks,
i changed it up a hair.
buddy of mine had a long leather all black banana seat.
i really need a longer sissy bar.....maybe i will throw the old one back on.
also, i put a horn on it. looks like an old microphone, but its all rusty.
will post more photos soon.

Re: Old Otasco Eliminator turned RAT!

you could break out the dremel (with a carbide burr) and cut out something cool on the chain guard. :)
have some fun with it.

for example cut out a knife shape (so you can see the chain/tire etc) then paint switchblade on the guard. (cheesy example i know)
you could tack/epoxy some sort of mess (expanded steel, alum. screen etc) behind it to keep it strong.

Re: Old Otasco Eliminator turned RAT!

icy,
i was thinking about doing something like that to it.
i am definitely going to keep the guard on there though.
just gotta figure out exactly what to do to it.....
