I always post here before CL because I want to give local RRB members first crack at my stuff before the general public.

EXACTLY!

Also, I would rather sell a whole bike local for a little bit less, then to hassle with packing. I tend to cautiously over pack everything, and a whole bike would take me forever. I would have to be getting a nice premium over my target price to want to spend the extra time to "properly" pack a whole bike.[/quote

That's just Common sense who wouldn't rather sell locally than to pack up a bike and ship, it's just a lil Frustrating to see some thing for sale and not have the opportunity to purchase it. GLWS !

I'm glad there are people like you who like to ship bikes. You fill a need. 8) Judging from your feedback, you have plenty of time to ship bikes. Many of the rest of us don't. And yes, we're putting our pick-up only bikes on here just to tease you. :p Gary

Thanks guys, I always assumed, "local pickup only," was code for "I own no tools!"(and even if I did I'd have no clue as to wrench or claw hammer)
So I never question the seller, kills alot of interest right then also fella's, so, for faster sales be willing to go the extra mile.
With me it's a question of economics, my truck gets 8 whole miles to a gallon, my Mustang, ewww it gets about a gallon to the mile.......OK maybe not that bad, but the drag radials are very very expensive, oil changes are very expensive, and race gas is really really expensive.
So shipping is lots cheaper usually!
But, more important than any other sales technique, do not raise your price, price high and be talked down. Never post an item at one price then relist it a week later at a higher price, I will never ever look at, "your store," again, and yes we have a member posting on my local Craigs who did exactly that. I recognized the bike from this site, saw it on a weds., pulled the ad up on friday at lunch only to find the price had increased $25.00.......So much for spending $50.00 on fuel to get a rat bike for $50.00 making my cost $100.00, the new price tipped it past $100.00 for a bike I could build for $75.00! I was really wanting to help someone out more than personally benifit, I have $50.00 ratbikes! Lots of them!

You cant even give a bike away here so "local pickup" is a joke. Tried selling parts on CL too with free shipping and never got a call. I even tried Ebay with whole bikes for local pickup and didnt get the first bid. Lost money listing.

As for local pickup on my end i wont go get any bike even free ones unless it is something i need for parts or want to keep. No wasting time and gas for something to enlarge the junkpile with.

I live in Indiana and the beaches are non-existent so to find a Dyno Stretch Roadster or Moto-Glide local was near impossible. But I not only found the bikes in California and Seattle respectively but I got on my knees and begged for a fellow RRB member to help me out with the shipping. Both times a generous member stepped up and did me a solid and I would do the same for any RRB member also. Both times I arranged for shipping before I purchased the bike and I always offer to pay for their gas and time. It doesn't hurt to ask. This could be a solution for a local pick-up only. Robert

This gives me re-assurance in our RRB community , maybe i;ll give That Method a try next time, hopefully you are near buy "Road Master" !

Thank for the positive and helpful incite Guyz .

Whole bikes are a pain to ship. I've done it...didn't care for it. I've purchased whole bikes too and had them shipped to me. It was likely a pain to the seller. I try to hold my complete bikes for the swap meets or CL. Sometimes I just come across the right person looking for one. But frames, parts, etc. I'll ship those all day long. Just shipped two frames and about to ship one more and about to list a handful more. Also going to start listing parts soon. To avoid handing out quotes all day, I hit usps.com, put in the size and weight. Then get the quote for the farthest away place to ship to, which is basically CA for me. Then include that amount in the shipped price. If it turns out someone lives much closer, I could just lower the price once we determine that they will be the buyer. But the cost difference on large packages doesn't seem to differ much between sending it a few states over or cross country. $10 difference at the most.

As I see it, I just don't really care. Why get worked up about some bike I can't buy b/c it's local pickup only? That'd be like getting upset b/c some flippers clog up the for sale forum with "no paypal" policies.... I don't get mad; I just click the back button, same as anything that's "local pickup only" but not in NJ/Phila.

Yeah, that's part of it. :D But, the no-paypal thing really is kind of a drag. With someone like Boltnut, with his very nice feedback, it's not a big deal (but it is a bit of a hassle, in terms of added steps.) But there's no way I'm sending out a MO to some guy who doesn't have much of a track record to fall back on.

Even best case scenarios, where a seller has like a 125/0/0 feedback, I'd prefer to go thru paypal b/c it's fast, convenient, and there is some sort of recourse in terms of grievances. (Obviously, it's not perfect, but at least there's a process. Not so much with a MO.)
Bottom line, if you're selling stuff online, paypal makes it quicker/easier/more confidence-inspiring for everyone. The fee is no fun, but you can set your prices a few bucks up to compensate for that.

For me, unless it's something that I simply GOTTA have, I'm sure to pass on something listed as no-paypal.

 I recall having some one say some thing on my feed back about using "SNALE MAIL" to send a payment :| , i guess he didn't realize he was using "SNALE MALE " too send my parts to me   I just kinda think if i gotta wait for my parts or a whole bike for that matter ,the seller can wait for payment :!:
i'm just not into putting my bank info in cyber space .

If it's listed local pick up AND if it's something that I want I'll ask. If they decide to ship, GREAT. If not, oh well. I didn't expect them to to begin with. After all, it was listed as pick up only. As for money orders, I won't use pay pal after they dropped the ball and let people into my account on TWO DIFFERENT OCCASIONS! Will they protect you from theft? My opinion is not so much(since they screwed up repeatedly with my account. Your experience may vary). Seems like there are a lot of threads on this site about people being ripped off using pay pal as payment.... :? I take postal money orders only. You can verify them online so it cuts wait time down(for buyer and seller) and just in case people don't know this...it is a Federal offense to commit mail fraud(yes, IF you use a postal money order as payment for goods and they are not delivered. That is mail fraud.) So will it take 2-3 days to get a postal money order from say, New York to California? Yes, it will. Will someone have to go to the post office and spend $1 more? Yes, they will. They can choose to ship, sell locally only, take pay pal as a gift or not a gift or take money orders only. It doesn't matter. We can do what is best for us. If people repeatedly listing "local only" bothers you click the "ignore user" button. Same goes for "_____ only" payment.

Since I started my new job I can understand local p/u only, I am deciding on blowing out alot of my stuff, but now its a matter of time when I can do it. I have had alot of fun shipping stuff here, but after Driving a Fed Ex truck all day, last thing you want to do is touch another box

I think the moral to this thread, both on the original "local pickup only" topic and the recent "no paypal accepted" topic, is the seller has the right to set the guidelines the they are comfortable with. As a buyer, you can always try to work with a given seller to have them make exceptions.
