My son turned 5 today (yes, the Ides of March, I wanted to name him Julius Brutus), so what do you get a 5 year old who's been riding his 12" bike without training wheel for almost a year... A 16" BIKE!!

He was on a Specialized Hotrock that was free, I couldn't find another sweet bike like that, so I won an eBay auction for a Schwinn Scorcher BMX bike, open box buy for under $60 shipped. Here's what the bike would look like if I'd left it alone:

I couldn't leave it alone, so last night after he went to bed I brought it into the living room and went to work. Put real grease on all the bearings, removed the training wheel brackets, removed chain guard, removed hand brakes (bicycle is coaster brake equipped), removed pad. removed decals, and swapped on a different saddle I had. I think it turned out pretty sweet:

He loves it, and he rides it very well, the only upgrade I'm looking at is possibly getting him a 28 tooth chainring from Porkchop.

Sweet 16!

I told you not to blink! Good to talk to you tonight! I needed to bounce a couple of those ideas off you before I spilled ALL the beans here!

If you need junky parts, stop by and bring a wrench, maybe a cordless sawzall.

Sweet little ride!!
Nice job and I agree it looks better without the stickers.

If your son ever wants some pinstripes on his new bike, just say the word! I need a good reason to break out the brushes!

Yeah, the stickers were over the top, they covered the entire frame, 3 on top tube each side, 2 on down tube each side, 2 on secondary tube each side, one on each fork leg, one on each seat stay, and one on each chain stay. Also removed the "MADE IN CHINA", the PACIFIC BICYCLE CO. info sticker, and the warning sticker.

The head badge remains.

I really didn't intend this bike to appear so similar to his "old" bike:

Aww, come on. Give the kid his pegs back would ya  Looks a million percent better now !!!

Heavy steel pegs for him to bang his shins on and for fat friends to try to hitch a ride on and bend his axles, I'll go get them out of the shop right now! haha

Trust me it's better to double with them than without standing on just the bolts and excess axle. I've done both.

Cute boy and cool trike behind him!

Cool little bike. Amazing the difference removing the decals make. Even looks like it's a different color now.

I'm glad someone else thought that, I originally thought it was a repaint.
