forks, headtubes, stems... help plz

It needs to be short enough so that the wedge and a couple of inches of stem are free to contact the inside of the steer tube. It also needs to be a snug fit, obviously, to do any good.
 
LBS called and said the fork tube is too short for my frame, none of the headsets they have will work :(

Visually, everything looked proper size to me so if it is too short, it must be barely. Is there any way around this or do I have to get another fork?
