It's quite the read, the man was one of the highest paid athletes in the world during the Depression. And people back then weren't the same as us:
"In 1925, he began intensive training, cycling 25 to 30 miles every evening after a full day’s work at the local logging camp."
I go and give you a hand.I moved it to the basement lab and tried to get it together yesterday. Struggled for a couple of hours, accomplished nothing. The crank arms won't fit through the cups, and the threads on the fork are mangled.
I followed up with a week or so of procrastination. Haven't touched the thing since. Can't get the bottom bracket to sit right, and the threads on the fork are mangled, can't get nuttin' on there. Lacking the tools and know how, I'm at an impasse. Motivation to rebuild the hubs has disappeared.I had the same...2 days of hard work and lots of swearing.
I was going to go over today but we got nailed with a stormThat's the problem with the winter builds, things get tight cash wise with holidays coming, weather gets chilly like friggin COLD and motivation for bragging rights that rarely get used, goes out the window. (Hey close that thing didn't ya hear it's COLD out there...)
We'll get it done. In time for the deadline? That's the question, still a few bits to track down, still a few procedures to complete. But next day off I'm there well get that bike together
Can you post better pics of the threading on the fork when you have time. We'll get it done. In time for the deadline? That's the question, still a few bits to track down, still a few procedures to complete.
I made a list.
Need to find:
Wheel nuts x4
Truss Rod nuts X2
Bottom bracket nut
Handle bar wrap
Need to do:
Clean and regrease hubs
Fix fork threading and mount fork
Mount tires and wheels
Fit and mount truss bars*
Sort out bottom bracket issues
Size and install chain
Install saddle
Nice to do (but can wait if it has to):
Oil treatment for Brooks saddle leather*
*Couple of secrets revealed here, Ingola provided me with a pretty pair of trusses and a Brooks saddle. Teased them earlier in a couple of pictures, but they flew below the radarView attachment 220271View attachment 220272
Took a quick break from shovellingCan you post better pics of the threading on the fork when you have time.
ya you just need a fork tap.We can fix that
Nice. I've got the die but I wish I had a handle for mine. I use a big pipe wrench carefully. If I yank on it too hard it will start threading on crooked and it will cut off center threads down in the middle if you're not careful. Ask me how I know...
