This past Sunday i spotted this Sears muscle bike on CL for 30 bucks. Monday morning i sent them an email and within minutes my phone rang. It was an elderly lady maybe in her 60s. We talked about the bike and i told her we were 75 miles apart and asked if meeting alittle closer was an option. (for their asking price i wasnt expecting them to travel far and completely understood if they didnt want to meet at all. I made it clear that i definitly was serious about purchasing the bike but could not come right then but i would see what i could work out.

That night my wife and i talked and she said to call the lady back to see if we could at least send them a money order check etc. to secure the bike and pick up in a few days. The payment would have been in the next mornings mail I have done this for distant buyers and never had a problem. You can usaully tell who is serious by the way they talk.

Called them back early the next morning and asked the lady could we do that. She says let me ask my husband. Before she finishes a sentence he starts screaming and going ballistic like a madman something about come get it RIGHT NOW blah blah blah. I told her forget it and i wasnt dealing with people like them. I try to do honest buisness and have been burned a few times myself but i get over it..life goes on. Just goes to show there are all kinds in this world.

Heres the bike and its still for sale. Oh Yeah she said they sold bikes for extra income because he was on disability. He wont make any money with that attitude.

To play the devil's advocate. There are a lot of scams that come across on CL where the buyer wants you to hold the item for them as they even pay you more. The guy was probably thinking you were one of those.

Personally, I wouldn't have accepted anything but cash on the barrel head for a $30 item. Any additional effort just isn't worth it.

Nah he was just an old jerk. Theres plenty of em just like him around here. I have ran into those in person.

I am with Kingfish. They are probably tired of people wanting bikes but never showing up or scammers. I doubt you are a scammer but they don't know you.

Look at the Scamming advise on CL.

http://craigslist.org/about/scams

DEAL LOCALLY WITH FOLKS YOU CAN MEET IN PERSON - follow this one rule and avoid 99% of scam attempts.
NEVER WIRE FUNDS VIA WESTERN UNION, MONEYGRAM or any other wire service - anyone who asks you to do so is likely a scammer.
FAKE CASHIER CHECKS & MONEY ORDERS ARE COMMON, and BANKS WILL CASH THEM AND THEN HOLD YOU RESPONSIBLE when the fake is discovered weeks later.

I have dealt with plenty of no shows and talkers on CL. I have also met some fine honest people. I have also held things and given the buyer the benifit of the doubt to send payment and have only been stiffed once. As i stated earlier you can generally tell who is "just talkin" and who is serious. I dont care if he didnt want to work with me it was the point of throwing a temper tantrum like a child. Simply say no i would rather not do that but if its still available when your ready to pick up then its yours. If you look at it the same applies on this very forum selling and buying parts. Most of us are just a name on a screen and dont know who we are actually dealing with but we take our chances .

/\ this.

Cash is king. I wouldn't have reacted in the same way, but I wouldn't have taken a money order to secure the bike. If you want it, come get it. If you tell me you are physically on the way, I'll hold it till you get here in case someone else calls. But if you are going to be a couple days, and another person with cash in his hand shows up before you, then he gets it.

Craig's list is worth every dime they charge you...

That's pretty funny, but in my case, I would have to change it to every DOLLAR they PAY me!! I have done well selling (and buying) on CL. Plus my dad took early retirement, but has been a house painter for a long time since then and he has gotten more work from CL than he ever did from any other ad he posted in flyers, papers, yellow pages, web, etc.

Plus I picked up this CURB ALERT from CL less than an hour after it was posted. I'll make some coin parting it out soon.

I agree,CL is great. Ya gotta deal with some flakes. I sell alot, trade more and buy a ton on CL. My last 4 motorcycles have come from trades on CL. Sold about 5 boats on it. Cars, bikes,boats,bicycles......Its great. Owned by ebay, and if ya post a car on CL and ebay, they combine your CL ad to go on ebay, so you pay the fee to ebay,if it sells. So DONT do both.....

I'll be completely honest with you, when I sell on Craigslist, simply because I have run up on all kinds, I list it for my asking price and all I want to know from a buyer is when they want to come look at it to buy it. Unless there gonna be passing through my town close to my house, I ain't gonna meet anybody anywhere or hold anything, mainly because I am usually selling it at a low price and usually are taking a loss on the item and they either want it or they don't. I can't stand a needy buyer, not to be rude or anything, but its an easy deal or nothing at all for me when it comes to my C-list sales. Now, on the other hand, I do cater to my ebay/forum sales quite a bit.
