I use to go fishin' on a bike but now where I want to fish is a bit to far for a bike so we drive to get to these dinks :)

Fishin' is my other past time !

Nice catch. This is what fishing is like in my area:

Not my pic, but it's from a Philly area fishing blog. Every body of water is filled with hybrid bluegills, which breed out to these little but rowdy green sunfish. (Hybrid bluegills are crossed between real Bluegills and Green sunfish-- the first generation tend to be huge and look like real bluegills, but a few generations out, they look mostly like Greens and top out around 6".) But, most times I ride by the Cooper river in spring or summer on a weekend, I'll see some lucky guy reeling in a bullhead or a channel cat....

In our neck of the woods fishing poles are trumped by bows and arrows (Asian Carp madness).

You mean, like, Grass Carp?

(Obviously not me, but dang....)

Weird thing is, even the common Carp (Cyprinus carpio) is actually not a native species; it was introduced from Europe, and that species is also found in Asia. The State of NJ does stock Grass Carp, too, but they're supposed to be using polyploid (sterile) lab-made specimens, b/c they're an invasive species. I was canoeing in my Dad's lake and I saw a MASSIVE polyploid Grass Carp in the shallows.... not as big as the one above, but probably 2/3 the size. Biggest freshwater fish I've ever seen in NJ, I believe. (Seen some really big Common Carp, too.... not as long, but fatter.)

They sure look the same! There was a major die off recently and scientists are trying to figure out what happened. Apparently part of the problem was trapped air bubbles in the gills.

I know some states, like Florida, have invasive species round-ups, where volunteers catch and remove non-indigenous species. As a kid, I used to visit my grandparents in St. Petersburg, Florida. Caught a bunch of African species like Tilapia and Nile Perch (Lates niloticus) and S.American fish like Oscars (Astronotus ocellaris). I know some hippies who'd be overjoyed if they found out that Grass Carp were dying off in large numbers, as both the Grass and Common Carp have been out-competing similar native species of fish (Buffalo Fish, ChubSuckers) for decades now.

All varieties of Asian Carp (Silver, Grass, Common..) are a growing and spreading problem in the Midwest and in some other parts of the country. I heard something about the mass die off recently as well. Doubt it made much of a dent in the population though. Those Silver Carp are dangerous when you're in a boat in a waterway infested with them. They are the variety that jumps and the large ones can waylay you at speed. While they're all invasive and a real problem for many reasons they do taste good when properly cleaned. They remind me of Tilapia, very mild with no fishy taste. Well if they are cleaned correctly with the dark meat strips removed.

Many people don't know how to clean them correctly which hurts the taste. It is that strip of dark meat that needs to be removed or it will ruin things. Then the fillets need to be scored so those Y bones will poke out when the fillet curls during cooking. Carp have had a bad rep for taste and everything else for so long that most people will say they taste terrible just because that is what they've heard and never tried them themselves. In Europe and Asia they've been a delicacy for centuries.

I've had carp and liked it....at restaurants. I'd be nervous to eat any local wild-caught fish; water's pretty gross 'round here.

Shame about the carp situation. I wish ppl'd be more careful.

I have not done it for years but saw a guy at the local pond yesterday with all of his gear on a bike. Chair, bait, tackle, poles, the works. The home built long tail xtracycle I am building will probably be my new fishing bike and kayak tow rig.
