Man you would be hard pressed to beat the quality of a Worksman one.
I know ind-chuckz has them all the time and I think he is around those prices or cheaper.

having used arais and sturmey archers i'd go with the sturmey archer. much lighter, less prone to funky braking noises. unless you just have to have that fat retro drum look...

Thanks all - yeah, like Bendix said - going for that fat retro look. I think I might modify my build plans a bit and not go with a front drum brake. It's a klunker build, and I just found a pair on bolt on Schwinn scripted front brakes. A lot lighter and arguably just as cool/retro/era correct.

I like the worksman, but the spoke holes are too large for what I want to build and I'm not too keen on spoke washers. Although I do appreciate the help. Thanks.

I think I have all the parts - just need to start putting them together. The start riding! :)

I have used multiple sets of the bolt on Schwinn Cantilever brakes. First they have at least three different fork clamp styles to match the shape of the fork blades. This must be matched correctly to your bike (and they were matched to Schwinn forks only. so good luck). The spring fork clamps were round and used a set screw to keep them from rotating under load. Good luck with that as it does not work. I used them on several spring fork restorations. Too fix the rotation problem I brazed the inside clamp to the fork blades, then had the fork blades cad plated, taped off the clamp before plating, no need for the set screw.

Overall they do not work well but they have a high cool factor. Also the brake pads will need to be updated.

Square one

If you use a tubular BMX cruiser fork like the Tange, you can have canti bosses brazed on and scrounge a pair of Mafac or early Dia-Compe brakes- maybe the best 'authentic' retro combo for klunker function and form... Running a drum wheel is probably the easiest front brake install, those Schwinn cantis could probably finance a good part of the project...

I got mine from the salvage yard for $3. I pulled it off of an Italian moped. There were several to choose from but this one was the only one with a 36 hole spoke count. I had to cut slots in the 11mm axle so my fork ends would clear. Stops on a dime. Check with the motorcycle shops in your area. If they service mopeds you might be able to find one cheap. Gary

Thanks Gary - good advice & pretty creative.

I've decided to go with Sturemy Archers front and back. They've been ordered. Will post pics once complete. Appreciate the advice. Saving the Schwinn bolt ons for a future project.
