So, I know properly greasing bearings is super important. My trip to the auto parts store left me in a stupor. I learned that there isn't just "grease." There are several kinds of grease. What's the best kind?

I use a medium synthetic, light green in color here in Florida due to the rain and high temperatures.

I use any lithium based grease. As long as it's slippery, and will not run off the parts, it'll do.
I swear by some red Valvoline all purpose automotive stuff. It's the perfect weight and tackiness for everything on a bicycle. I think this particular packaging is discontinued but you get the idea: http://www.sanon-valvoline.com.hk/product.php?Id=86
Unless you have special purposes that require something different, I totally agree, I use Nulon lithium automotive cv joint and wheel bearing grease...

I used white lithium grease BITD; it did the job OK, but it smelled really fishy and I found it was prone to separation in a relatively short amount of time.
I use some Red'N'Tacky for some applications; it's great for truly loose (ie, no retainer) bearings, sliding contacts (eg, seatposts in the frame), and C/B hubs. I use the teal X-tra HD stuff for BBs, hub bearings, headsets if there is a retainer cage, etc.
But, bikes are such low-load, low temperature apps (except C/B hubs if you go hard on them), it really doesn't matter too much. I just like to save money, and if I can achieve "overkill" at the same time, that's great.

For my bearings I use Phil wood bearing grease. For my brake cables I use phil wood tenacious oil. For chains I use finish line cross country on all my bike. Doesnt hold dirt like other and doesnt sling off.
I guess that is the problem when buying on clearance?I buy whatever is on the clearance table at Pep Boys. This last tub is a black colored "synthetic" something or other. It has a weird consistency and doesn't really stick where you put it... ?

I used multiple-purpose lithium grease on my bike last summer. It seems to work fine. One of those things I've worried about ever since though because I wasn't sure if it was the right stuff for the job. Thanks for the responses. All the lithium mentioned makes me feel better.
