Went camping with the family Friday night at Bruneau Sand Dunes(tallest dune in United States). We came home Saturday afternoon for a banquet on Sat. night. As I was driving back into Boise, I had an itch to buy a bike. It had probably been at least a month since my last purchase.

Checked craigslist and not much of interest. So I called my brother for something and he told me of a guy selling a bunch of old bikes at his house. I went and looked to find mostly rebuilt mountain bikes of okay quality but no vintage bikes. He did have a Miata bike that was aluminum with some funky lugs.

The banquet was for a group called Rec Unlimited that teaches snow skiing to kids with disabilities. My oldest son is one of the students. They had a silent auction and I walked out with a new Schwinn Typhoon. I bid it up and quit, my wife finished the bidding to more than I thought it was worth. No loss as it goes to a worthy cause.

Still not the bike I am looking for. Check craigslist about 9pm. "Prewar ladies Hiawathe-$20" I immediately email telling him sold. He replied that I was second in line for the ladies bike but I find he may be a new parts source in the process.

Wake up, go to church, family dinners and come home to check email. First deal fell through so I get to pick the Hiawathe up Monday night. I am so excited to get a ladies bike of that vintage.

Those darn itches.

I will post pics later tonight after I pick it up. Maybe more parts too. He said the extra wheelset $5-10. Whoohoo.

Mark, I still don't know, if I can keep up with your finds as of late.

I went over and picked up the Hiawatha. Spray bomb paint job and it rough condition. Wheels seem okay but had a hard time with the axle staying in as I unscrewed the axlenuts. I also scored a 24" coasterbrake rim. It has a Komel hub made in Germany. The frame has a few issues that I hope will be workable. Rear triangle slight bent toward the cranks. And the worst is the bottom chainstay has a crack that looks like it happen because of water in the tube that froze. Suggestions please!!

Here is the Schwinn bought at the silent auction tags and all. I think I might try selling it before I get tempted to part it.

That sprocket needs 2 be replaced with the same one but older... Nice.

With the frame issues cman I think it would be cool to make your own top tubes, lower it and rake it as well . Kinda make your own boys bike out of it. You can do all the frame mock up on the tubes yourself and take it to a welding shop and have them buzz it together for you (if you don't have a welder?). They generally don't charge too much if you have all the tubes fishmouthed and paint from joints to be welded cleaned. When all they have to do is just weld it together that generally makes them happy and costs less to the customer. If you have any questions I would be glad to help you out as much as I can. Just some thoughts, Troy.

Thanks for the replies. Troy, the wife deserves a bike. But I do like your girls bike modified frames (future). I am going to strip it down, and take to a friend to see about fixing the split/crack. Paint it Pretty pink maybe pearlized . Black rims, black tires, black seat, Black bars. Make it a Bad Betty.
