Re: 1961 Schwinn Twin straight bar MORE PROGRESS

I had the day off today. It was ABSOLUTELY GORGEOUS weather to melt metal together !!

OK, so first on my list of hurdles to overcome was the 57 feet of extra fork sticking out of the headtube ( approximate measurement of course  )

before:

Johnny disassemble...

that's not a split ... it's a locking fork....

It's now at the point of no return

It slices , it dices!!

I removed 1.75 inches out of the middle. I slid a neck in to make sure it would line up, cleaned up the burrs,

ZAP ZAP ZAP!!!

You can't tell in the pic but I had a HUGE grin under that mask

I didn't take any pics of the grinding and cleaning up , etc. ( we all know what that part looks like :D )

I threw it all back together to see if my measurements were ok .......

THEY WERE!! .....

Then I wanted to see if I liked a bobbed rear fender look ( threw the front fender backwards in the rear )

Well see about that....
I am patiently waiting for my seat post from member : Slowriderz to arrive .
Without that you cant get a real feel for the seat and where it lands. So I don't want to jump the gun and chop up the fender
( not even sure if its gonna be THAT fender or not )

My other Ratbike approves  ( built it like 5 or 6 years ago )

I have tomorrow off too .... If my seat post gets here then I'll have more to share 8)

stay tuned.....

Re: 1961 Schwinn Twin straight bar MORE PROGRESS

Really liking this build so far! :D You should stick with the rear fender, looks cool! 8)

Re: 1961 Schwinn Twin straight bar MORE PROGRESS

Nice job on the fork mod. 8)

Re: 1961 Schwinn Twin straight bar MORE PROGRESS

That back mudguard looks perfect... I reckon you should just leave it as is :D

Thanks guys! :D Everything is coming along as planned. I'm really happy with the vibe the bike is giving.
The mail man didn't bring me my seat posts today. So,I guess I'm in a bit of a holding pattern 'til they arrive. Fingers crossed for tomorrow  . I'm itchin to tinker!

Re: 1961 Schwinn Twin straight bar MORE PROGRESS

Bike is turning out great! 8) It's amazing how the tires appear to be the identical shade of green as is on the bike.

Thanks dude! I too was amazed that the brand new sneaks matched the patina'd old house paint so closely. :D
I couldn't be happier with the match !

GOOD NEWS!!! Mailman brought my seat posts today. Thanks Slowriderz!
( I just got home from work @ 9:30 pm, so hopefully I'll have time to tinker before work tomorrow )
Updates coming soon !

STAY TUNED ......

Re: 1961 Schwinn Twin straight bar MORE PROGRESS

I was able to get some tinker time after work today :D .......

I test fit my seat post from member: Slowriderz ( Thanks! 8) and the seat I bought from member : Terry66 ( SO AWESOME!! )

I really love the look of the 2 together. REEEEALLY happy as I think it goes great for the overall look I'm shooting for. But the frame itself wasn't letting the seat drop down quite as low as i'd hoped....... So here is the second obstacle that I had to overcome.....

here is the reference measurement I took

I figured that if I trimmed a bit off the frame I might be able to sneak another inch closer to the fender........

1st up was to slim down and streamline the Schwinn S seat post clamp.....
So I rigged up a hokey set up in the driveway ( It worked though , so it cant be THAT hokey. plus no blood loss  )

That's an old rubber rim strip to stop it from spinning  wrapped around a cheapo seat post with a scrap jammed onto it ( O.s.h.a. ? )

1st rough cut with the angle grinder

I did say ROUGH

Then I cleaned it up with the stacked sandpaper wheels in the angle grinder ( those things are life savers!! )

here It is to show how much the frame was getting in the way of slamming the seat

The key of course was to try to preserve the patina .....
Chopped off the excess seat tube.....

I think it was worth it in the long run

Stay tuned.......

Re: GUMBY RUMPUS ***** New seat Fun !!!

Good work on the slam.
Terry's prison seat looks perfect on there.

Re: GUMBY RUMPUS ***** New seat Fun !!!
