I had been kinda messaging a guy back and forth about an old bike... turned out it wasn't what I wanted... Guy emails me a pic of another bike... it looks to be more of what I'm looking for, question is... about how old do you think it is and what should I offer him that's fair? Of course he wants all he can get and I want it as cheap as possible... so what's a fair offer? Supposed to be a Rollfast with a red stripe hub, I know nothing about it aside from that.

Depending on your location I would say that is worth $40 (midwest) to $100 (westcoast). It is going to need new tires and tubes- $40-60.

Having just been through this over the weekend, try to press him to come up with some kind of fugure.

Try to find a comparable bike for sale on the bay or something and draw a comparison...

I hate making offers....

One bike I looked at over the weekend was in worse shape than that and she wanted $75 firm. I had offered $40. It was a late 50's Rollfast 24" boys bike with a tank (hornless) but the wheels were totally shot and the paint was more like rust..

Yep... I hate the "make an offer"... I can't buy it and sell it...

I'm in Northwest Georgia if that makes any difference value wise... but yea kinda figured it's gonna need tires and tubes...

Remember, you can always negotiate up, but down is not so easy.

Be willing to walk away, I've gotten back into my car and gotten the ol "hey, wait a second....

put a better bike in your car/truck prior to going over, tell him you just bought it for $25.00

Hey acuh,
Where are you located? I'm located in Marietta, GA. Being in your 'market', I'd point out the trashed rims, handlebars, etc.. roll your eyes about having to put some money into it just to get it road worthy, then tell him $40. I wouldn't go any higher.

Heck, if it doesn't work out, Double Nickle is ALWAYS selling something!

Cheers,
Dr. T

I'm in LaFayette... Which is about 25 miles south of Chattanooga TN.

I could throw this in the back of the truck before I ride over... tell him I picked it up for nearly nothing...

I need another bike like a hole in my head... but....

Yep, show him a 'comparable'.

Looks like DN beat me tothe punch...
Hey, since you're in 'the hood', try to make it to our show next month.
Click on the 'Click here For More Info' link in my signature for the event info.

Shoot, if this deal doesn't work out, I know of a couple bikes/frames that will be on sale there.

Cheers,
Dr. T

As a seller of "stuff" I will say that when I say make me an offer you are better to do that, as what the lowest amount that I will take is probably lower than what I will tell you. My opinion, offer him what you you think is fair, if it is not enough he can tell you and you can negotiate. Just my .02.
