kinda spinnin' off another of my own threads. i'm meaning a schwinn type springer i want a brake for, but if ideas get thrown for other types all the better i guess.

i have a disc on one and a drum on another, but they were prettymuch digging through the old treasure pile and/or a lucky buy. that's probaly what might happen again since i'm always broke, but i figured i'd ask what others might have come up with.

thanks for any help or ideas.

My friend made me a bracket for my stock brake on my '84 Schwinn Cruiser 5. The holes for the forks are the same angles as the forks to make them hold better.

thanks. i'll add that to the possibilities list. i'm leaning towards looking for a drum brake at the moment but if opportunity drops something else, i'll probaly run with that instead.

I don't know many peeps that have done this, but double nickle followed my lead in the rrbbo5 with huge success.

What i like to refer to as the "suicide brake" (coaster brake front hub)
here's his thread.

And my brake that inspired him. (Fyi, i was not the first to come up with this idea i just simplified it for the springer fork)

simple concept. ya need a lever, a chunk of chain and a return spring (tension spring) :)

the brake can also be fine tuned (ie- preloading the coaster by advancing the chain on the sprocket one tooth at a time)

neat lookin', but not for this bike i don't think. i'm kinda imagining a female rider and i can't see them being interested in suicide brakes. i'll have to file it in the future experiments drawer.

is that a 20" bike or is the model just really tall?

When did mine that's what I thought till I got the forks. The hole at the bottom of the neck doesn't move with the forks so the caliper brake will seldom be in alignment with the rim.

plus in my case it's a 20" wheel on a 26" springer. your idea would let me slide it down to where i need it, though.

It's actually a 26" compact. (24" rims with 24x3" tires)
the 90* seat post allowed me to really drop the seat, but the model is tall and in platforms. :)

The suicide brake is a lot safer and easier to use than it sounds. :)
