I was out at a friends house the other day talking about bicycles and motor bikes and he asked me what my thoughts was on how to build a handicap bike for him and we came up with some Ideas but I thought Id ask if anyone here has built one before. It would have to be hand crank since he has no legs.

This would be the most basic DIY bike.

But most hand cycles are a trike format.

What about making something like a modern Irish mail? Rowing motion for power, steering, and brakes all built into the handles.

When you say bike, do mean two wheels? That could be a challenge, but possible.

Should have said trike

While not usually a fan of Brad Grahams work (Galvanised conduit as a frame tube?) He did come up with a cool hand powered trike in his Evil Genius book, good place to start if anyone wanted to build one...

Ya, try atomiczombie.com for plans.
pretty cool bikes but he needs hand cranks

Yes, the hand cycle, he has planes for electric bike as well. Adapt electric so he can keep his hands free to enjoy the ride. Well he can keep his hands on the bars instead of the crank.

Or go electric on a delta wolf

I coach Special Olympics cycling. While the folks on my team all ride bikes/trikes without any significant modifications, I always marvel at some of the rides I see at the State competition. Lots of very cool stuff being done to make bikes suitable for the athletes.

I know an oldtimer who used to love riding, but his left arm has been injured and has since atrophied to such a degree that he can't do a whole lot with it. The right arm is still plenty strong. He's interesting in riding again; I think i'm gonna give him my old mtb, but with one of those one-lever-two-cables brake lever, and some old stem shifters mounted as thumbies on the bar, so he can control both derailers with his right hand. It's an idea I gleaned from some of the Olympics guys, but they tend to do a trigger/gripshifter combo on one side....

The SRAM Dual Drive would be great for that

Yeah, at least one of the athletes I see up in Princeton has a tadpole trike with the SRAM dualdrive setup. Sturmey-Archer makes the same kind of set-up now as well.

For Jon's bike,I'm not going with a dualdrive b/c I already have the derailers set up f&r; don't need anything but the double lever, and to re-cable everything.
