This is my 1953 Western Flyer. The frame just arrived a couple days ago. Most of the other parts are parts from previous builds, that I had laying around.

Re: Heavy Metal

Nice fat skinny setup.
Good luck.

Re: Heavy Metal

Trying my x53 springer, if I use it there will be a color change.

Re: Heavy Metal

That taillight is absurdly cool!!!!

Re: Heavy Metal

I got the X53 forks painted black, and going back on. It's no more than right that they go back on a Western Flyer.

Front end back together, ditched the light.
img_3063.jpg

Removed back rim, switching over to a skip tooth drive.
img_3064.jpg

Rim and tire are ready to go. Hub is an air cooled Musselman off an Elgin, with a 10t sprocket.
img_3065.jpg

Crank removed, getting skip tooth ready to install.
img_3067.jpg

Went with a JC Higgins 22t sprocket from a girls bike.
img_3068.jpg

I had to rebuild the two X53 rims I bought for the Jetflow, so I could use the skip tooth rim and chain off the Jetflow on the Western Flyer.

It was a long day, but I'm impressed with the way Heavy Metal is looking.

Re: Heavy Metal updated 5-5

Just finished painting the pin stripes. Boy I can't believe how shaky I've gotten with age. Camera's are amazing, how good they can make something look. I think I'll stick to solid color bikes.

Nice build so far - curious - who made the frame? Robert
It's a Murray frame. Can you tell the year built from the pictures below?

Re: Heavy Metal updated 5-9

Got a couple more pieces today for Heavy Metal. A 50's Western Flyer speedometer, and an 18t sprocket from a 20" bike.
I need to pickup another chain, I don't want to cut the ones I already have. I'm going to replace the tie wraps attaching the cable to the forks. As soon as I come up with a better way.

Great looking bike! I really like the clean look of that springer!

Thanks guys for all the great comments.

Re: Heavy Metal updated 5-9

I decided to attach the speedometer cable to the forks using 3ea. O rings. It's simple and clean looking.

Re: Heavy Metal updated 5-16

Made a gear change on Heavy Metal, swopped the 22t skiptooth sprocket for the 24t sprocket that was on the Jetflow. The outcome was great for both bikes. Picked up a nice 53 Virginia tag from MadTek.
