XC I did the same as you, no helmets on cruisers, since the riding style wasn't as aggressive as my other bikes. Until I got hit by a car last Summer while crossing on foot at a green light. I flew 10 feet in the air and landed on my back and head. I was lucky enough to pull a Ninja move in flight by tucking my head in my chest when I realized I was airborne. I lost a small patch of hair from the scrapping but no fractures luckily.
My conclusion after that was that I can smack my head on the pavement at any moment. So now I always wear my brain bucket every time I push any pedals.
