Hibbard True Value Deluxe 1938-39 Snyder - 9/11 GOT IT

I had someone respond to my TRADE STUFF FOR OLD BIKES ads and this is what I am getting from him (he lives in a different town).

It's a Hibbard and he was told its from the 1930s. Does anyone know anything about these?

Nice bike. The fork looks like the ones on Huffy's but it could have been added some time in it's life.

looks westfield built to me. I agree on the fork & hardware, doesn't quite look right. give the rear triangle a good look over, if the wheel is that bent there could be frame damage..

Thanks for the links. I have found other Hibbard's that are Sun Racers and have the same frame and fork. One even says that it's a Snyder built frame.

Oldfarts Hibbard appears to have the same headbadge but a different frame.

That Worthpoint link looks to be the same frame fork and chainring with the stretched skinny hearts.

I found some references to a Sun Racer that suggests it's Snyder built. I have also found a few that have the same fork, stem, and chainring.
Good point on the frame. Hard to tell in these photos. The seller is going to take some daylight photos for me today.

The sprocket is probably H.P Snyder/D.P. Harris. That is what my research has found. And the nut rattling in my head seems to think the Hibbard name plate is associated with them too.

I've seen examples of Hibbards built by both Snyder and Schwinn.

While I was researching my Schwinn, Hibbard, I did find references to Snyder built bikes later in HSB&Co. As they spread out the "True Value" brand, they used other manufacturers. Sorry, but that's about as much as I know. Since they were a mover and shacker in hardware, 90% of the info inregard to them has to do with Hardware collectables, knives, wood planes and such.

Ok, I'll jump. Ya know, the more I look at the sprocket, fenders, and kickstand. I truely think it's mid to late 40's! The front end is also interesting. But we all know, I've been wrong before.

Anything is possible. I paid the guy remotely today, but have to wait for a friend to deliver it in the next week or so.

looks like Snyder ~1938-1941, came in varying levels from a plain Motobike with fenders as the only sheet metal up to fully equipped.

My BMX Tow Truck buddy delivered the Hibbard today from Charleston for me. Gave him a bunch of tires and parts in exchange for the favor.
What a cool find! Now I need to see if there is a resource for Snyder data codes. The serial number is 1118884X (maybe it was a rare X-perimental model )
Frame and forks are straight and solid.
Rear rim is tacoed. I wonder if I can bend it back to shape. These original rims look to be in good shape (other than the back one having a slight bend )
New Departure skiptooth hub.
I love the elongated sweetheart skiptooth sprocket.
Skiptooth chain appears to be in pretty good shape.
Peaked fenders. These are old and in good shape, but I am not so sure that they are original to the bike.
Anyone ever heard of VM handlebars? There is a big VM stamped on them.

Hibbard, Spencer, and Bartlett were big distributors/retailers in the 30's in Chicago. I think they go back into the 1890's or even farther. I know the name not from bikes, but from guns. They were big gun distributors too. Gary

Well Kingfish I'm beginning to think we're the only 2 on the planet with "Hibbard" examples. I always wanted to be in an exclusive club, how bout you? :lol:

First my 36 Schwinn, and now your Snyder. Life is good!

I guess now we need to start collecting the pockets knives, guns, and wood planes. :roll:
