If I find and old frame and want to switch out the crank and or forks how will know what cranks fit or what head sets will fit? Trial and error or is there a way to measure? Sorry for the newbie questions.

It all depends on the style of frame. Most cruisers use standard parts for head sets and Bottom brackets with the exception of Schwinn. Other bikes with 3 piece cranks are fairly standard too with the exception of Raliegh. The best thing is to post up you project bike when you get it. Then somebody should be able to help you.

In the mean time, start reading some of Sheldon Brown's articles.

I use what may well be the most common method on this board, which is taking the ones you stripped off bikes you found in the trash or your cousin's basement, and stick 'em on there.
