Just spent some hours in the basement. For one to swap out parts and tires from the kids old bikes to their new ones and second to install the new kickstand on the IronPig. The old one was so bent that even with the stand down both tires had ground contact...
Problem was, the bolt of the old stand was firmly rusted in and didn't budge. After I mangled the screwhead I resorted to brute force.
First I weakened the counter part by making several saw cuts:

Then I took a screwdriver an a hammer to wedge and break the part...

New stand installed (this time with a serious amount of grease applied to the screw and threads)

And we have ground clearance again...

With temperatures being below 0°C since a few days now an older issue came up again: the shifter cable froze after a few minutes of cycling...
So I bought a new shifter cable and tried the following:
First I pulled out the old cable and with a ball needle on the pump blew a few times through the cable casing to blow the water out. After that I flooded with WD-40 and blew it out as well. Then I took some "White lithium grease" (also WD-40 brand) and flooded the casing with that and applied some more onto the cable itself. Then I put it all together again. I hope this will take care of the issue for this winter...
 
While at it I had to take off the shifter and took some pictures while assembling it again. I thought some of you might be interested... 😉
Basic part is a long bolt that sits in the hole from the original rod brakes mechanics.

The shifter itself is mounted on a piece of 22mm tube that I rounded a bit to get a snug fit to the frame

This all sits on the bolt

And is pulled tight with a dished washer and a regular nut. The dished washer helps to keep it centered and to avoid wiggling.

The shifter handle I made from a long threaded bolt, a small piece of tube and a piece of the original pedal rubber. The shiny sleeve tubes come from an antic camera lens extension.

The head of the grip bolt is filed to fit in-between the raised parts of the shifter knob.

The handle and sleeve is then pressed on and centered with the backcover of an old pocket watch and an acorn nut to finish it off.

For today it worked. No frozen cable despite the frosty temperature...

The IronPig still had his spiked tires on and as I was servicing the CobblestoneRat I also swapped the tires of the pig...

It runs on standard Marathons now for the summer.
 
And back to spiked tires we went yesterday...

And also the wild geese feel that the winter is coming...
