Just thought of something. Are you the proper size for your bike? Even though you built it. Was it originally designed to hold YOU? Things usually break because of stress on that area.

Skipton, just post a picture of your Massive calf muscle, that should clear up any confusion about why the thing broke.
Got new crank set cheap off eBay came with sealed bearing bottom braket. So smooth.
Going to ride it for a couple days make sure everthing is good. Then paint cranks brown.
