Is it worth $20?

Well, there's that whole golden rule thing (not the cynical truism of "who has the gold makes the rules")of treating others as you'd want to be treated. And the corollary saying, "Don't be THAT guy."

Maybe that person needs the money too, and maybe it's a fair price, but don't you just hate it when you set what you think is a fair price,or even a generous price for quick sale, and someone asks you for even less? I have seen people quibble for pennies at a garage sale, and believe me, I am not thinking "Wow, what a smart bargain hunter" but "wow, how petty can you be"...

Anyway, just another perspective. We make our decisions, and draw our own ethical lines in life - i think it is good to be thoughtful about these things.

b,Dont get so tense...

The worse the seller can say is NO.

Its a fun game us Haglers play.

You should try it sometime and loosten up.

Sometimes if it's already a really good deal, I just say, "You want $100? Okay, here ya go!" But you know, that rarely happens with Franklins. The art of haggling is way too much fun but one has to have a conscience NOT to rip people off.

I also think that we rat rodders have an edge at getting stuff at a good price since the labor involved in fixing these bikes is just a walk through the park whereas others would pull their hair out having to go to a bike $hop!

I tend to not do much haggling. I see the item, I decide if it's worth it to me, and I either pay, or walk away. Only if I feel their price is ridiculous do I haggle.

Call it selective haggling.

There is also the fact that since $20 is a decent deal for the bike, so when you go back to offer the guy less, it might already be gone.
That's why I agree in the E-mail and haggle in person. I only haggle when it's a bike that is going to be parted out or is nothing special and they are asking full blown retail. Most of my bikes come from the local scrap yard and second hand stores. I am used to getting decent bikes for $5-$25. I normally only haggle the craigslist people who most times NEED to be haggled. If the seller says no it's their choice. On the bike in question I'd still pay the $20 if he said no but I gotta try.

Actually, I do haggle when I think it's appropriate to do so. didn't mean to come off tense - some folks will haggle over anything and price/situation does not factor. I tend to be more of the "selective haggling" school, Like deven_science.
