I e-mailed and she said she'd let it go for $160, I tried to do some research and found something that said German bikes are rare here in the states. It looks a little rough as I told her but I honestly don't have a clue, I've never even heard of the brand. Bauer???

I'm just worried about paying too much, it looks rough too.
If it was complete and in original paint I'd go the full $200 no questions asked, but missing the front wheel, fender, fender light, seat, and looks to be rattle-canned over the original paint so there goes a ton of hours into it...........I'm just thinking I should hole out for a better price.

Bauer still makes guns I think....

used to have a cute little 25"
'

.25 what's that good for other than target practice or shooting tin cans? The smallest gun I own is a .38 and it feels like a toy to me.......but I grew up with guns. I like my 7.62mm Russian mouser...... Has a nice kick to it and will go right through 3/8 plate steel........ Had to upgrade the backdrop for target practice at my buddy's place.

I don't think a good deal based upon being incomplete. Even complete, the asking price would be a stretch. Rare doesn't always mean valuable either. The frame design and cranks looks alot like Rapido bikes that were Czech made. I am sure this bike was imported during the 50's.

Here is another that I ran across. The buyer posted in several forums and never found a good answer.

this is from board member fireproof in reguards to my wifes bike

Greg66 is right. My bet is that your Aristocrat was made by Bauer.
"The L. Bauer & Co factory in Klein-Auheim started as a bicycle factory in 1919. In 1936 some small motorcycles with 75cc and 98cc SACHS engines were added to the production line." Your bike looks VERY much like the Bauer I have with the exception of the head badge and decals. The lettering that you had on your tank looks like the same font style as that on the Bauer. I saw a photo online of a fiftieth anniversary Bauer which would make it a 1969. I think our bikes are older than that . . . maybe early sixties or late fifties?
btw, Your bike is looking great!

That's a tough call. On one hand it would be neat to have because of its scarcity. On the other it is incomplete, looks badly rusted on some components, and she's asking $200, clearly a number she arrived at through no legitimate, knowledgeable means.

IMHO it's not worth it at her "let it go" price of $160. Certainly $60, maybe even $100, but whatever price you get it for there's going to be a lot of work ahead to get that bike in decent condition again.

What size is this bike and how would you like to own it? I don't think I'd try to restore it. I think I would make her a good and fair standing offer, so if she does'nt sell it soon maybe she'll call.

I found a Bauer Bicycle site in New zealand and in Austrlia.

I have a 24" Viscount cruiser that looks a lot like this bike. Without tank and think I paid $25 complete

Apparently someone thought it was worth it, the ad's been deleted! Sounds like a stretch for 160 though. I have a theory that all these lower end european bikes bought all their parts from the same supplier, possibly Union, known for it's pedals, and owner of the Royce Union name. Seems identical to the Rapido frames, and the chainguards are the same as several Stelbers I've seen! Second theory is that all the lower end English touring bike makers did the same thing! -Adam

wow must be someone dumber than me, I just decided to let it go and on my way to the store I see 4 bikes just sitting in a yard for sale, I ask him and he says $30 take 'em all or trade me for a ride-able bike!
I looked them over and I think back to the two throw together schwinns I had. Trade was made and I hauled home 4 bikes. A Hercules, a Rallye, A Schwinn Caliente, and an oldschool Huffy BMX. Check them out

Never underestimate a .25 Auto. There have been more civilians killed in the US with .25 Auto's than you could count. :| Gary
