A quick note about galling. When sanding like I did yesterday leads to galling from the heat generated when smoothing aluminum.

Later today when I get started will rig up an oil pan with water and hit it with the orbital, to finish getting it smooth and to take off the aluminum powder re-attached to the chainwheel.

I have a chunk of quartz countertop in the garage I take my 9x11 sandpaper sheet and stick it down flat. Usually just a couple pieces of 2 sided tape
Handy dandy spray bottle of water to keep it wet. Then work my material back and forth (figure 8) on the surface. Helps with flatness

I use compound instead of sanding with aluminum.
Thanks @ingola , the plans for polishing wheel and compounds will come next after the deeper milling marks are gone.
