They sold them. Probably had different manufacturers. Free Spirit is the only name I'm familiar with through Penneys. Don't know what there earliest bikes were.
That is a cool seat.

I think Free Spirit only went through Sears, though I could be wrong. The earlier Jc Penny bikes were sold under the Jc Penny "Foremost" name.

i'm pretty sure the 'murray' sticker visible through the chainring is our clue as to who is responsible for making this one

Oh that's right. I forgot about Foremost and I'm sure I'm wrong about Free Spirit being Penney's. Don't know where I got that.
