Lacing up a rim with a new hub

I have a slight problem, the rear rim on my grape krate in single speed, have come across on new sturmey 3 speed rear hub 28 hole that I want to get laced into the stock rim, the local bicycle shop told me the stock spokes will not fit and that I need to purchase number 182 spokes in a 2 cross setup, the spokes are 2.50 ea. what do yoiu guys think, is he on the level? thanks HUGH

If the hubs are a different size than yes you need new spokes of the right length butt 2.50 is high for spokes most shops around here are. 75¢ or less

2.50 each? That's high. When I need a custom length, I only pay $1 each for stainless steal. Call Memory Lane Classics. They've usually have a good deal on spokes.

Moved my wheel from that shop to another, 1.00 spokes and 50.00 lace as compaired to 2.50 spokes and 64.00 lace up, we'll see if I came out ahead in the end, thanks for the quick replies.
