Join me for a tour of the wide spot on the highway that is Udall.
Udall was all but wiped off the map on May 25,1955 when Kansas' deadliest tornado struck. Here are a few pics of the devistation.
Here is the memorial to the 78 souls lost that night.
Far from being a bustling metropolis, much of our "downtown" section sits boarded up.
Farming is the name of the game here.
Cotton will be harvested within the week.
The Co-op sees a lot of traffic at harvest time.
The silos were built shortly after the tornado.
Here is half of the UPD motorpool
We have a machine shop that supplies parts to many of Wichita's aircraft companies, it is behind the backhoe that is tearing up my lawn.
The local neighborhood committee takes care of several large flowerbeds with lots of big rocks and some statues.
The Volunteer Fire Department is quick to act in an emergency. Here they are taking care of a small incident in my garage.
This is the west wall of our post office. One of my favorite afternoon backdrops.
The Grade School can be seen in the background of these two pics. The youngsters through the 5th grade spend their days here.
The city park is currently undergoing major renovations, new playground equipment, new pavilions, and building housing an outdoor stage and the restrooms. The park also has a sand volleyball court, tennis courts, a basketball court, a handful of horseshoe pits and a retired Santa Fe caboose.
That about covers everything except the two gas stations and the railroad tracks. Not even a stoplight to show off. If you happen to be traveling south from Wichita on K-15 stop by one of the gas stations on the highway and ask where to find the guy with all the bikes, just be careful not to blink or you will miss it.
