Looking for more info on this Texas Ranger

I came across this great bike in a Wallis, Texas, antique/second hand store and was unable to leave without it. I'd like to get some more information on the bike, particularly when it was made. The little research I have been able to do has gotten me as far as it being a Roadmaster Texas Ranger. I have no idea what year and if it is still in fairly original condition, hopefully the below photos can get me some answers here, much appreciated! The serial number seems to be J468529.

Made by AMF, early '60s. Rear wheel and apehangers not OE, the rest looks right. Not much but it's all I got.

Thanks for the information, I was hoping that the bike was older than me (I am a 1966 vintage) so looking like it might be then. I will keep it as much as I found it (as probably some kid desired it to be with the apehangers many years ago). Great looking bike and in functional ratty condition!

The chainring puts this bike's age right were you want it to be--mid 1960's. Any earlier would sport the famous star-spangled ring. Apart from the markings, this bike isn't much different than an AMF Skyrider of the same era.

I agree on this as mid 60's. And it looks to be undamaged, even got the original pedals and nice patina. Maybe it has the original batteries in the tank, they may a date on them. There isn't a chart for the serial numbers on those AMF bikes unfortunately.
I'd give it a good scrubbing (except on the lettering), then wax it down or clear coat the patina. And since the rear wheel isn't original, a 2 speed auto or kickback w coaster would work fine.

No batteries in the tank and all very clean in there. Anywhere I might come across an older 26" rear wheel with the 2 spd auto (so it wouldnt be new looking) compared to the rest of the bike? I agree on clear-coating to preserve the lovely patina.

A Bendix yellow band hub laced to an rim that looked like a match to the front would be your best bet. I think they were manufactured until 1965 so it would be about the same age.

The skinny chain guard is late 60s - early 70s. I have one w/a BMA/6 decal on the seat tube, making it at least a '71. Also, the Shimano brake hub is a newer replacement. -Adam
