Well I made two craigslist runs South of the border this week--the Michigan/Ohio border that is...but I picked up some goodies. First was a '64ish Mattel Stallion which I've already gone through with new tires, grease, and tubes. Cleaned off most of the chrome and took for a spin around the dirt roads I live on (finally, a bike that thrives on gravel).

A couple days later I ran out to Cleveland in my little Escort hatchback to pick up 2½ bikes from a custom shop guy that everybody here would have appreciated. First is what I believe to be a 45-46 CWC Roadmaster, which is the perfect match to a ladies I picked up a few weeks ago from the same blackout era. I stopped off at the Memory Lane swap on my return trip and someone helped to ID my next find as an early ballooner, 35-38 Elgin Redbird. Both of these bikes have the wrong chainguard. The Elgin also needs a correct chainring, fenders and some other knickknacks but I'm in no rush. Also got a Schwinn Corvette with a difficult serial to decipher but the starburst gives it away at '61-63 I believe. It has the stainless fenders with the rear reflector (spraybombed as well).

IDs on either of the chainguards would be awesome; I know I've seen the one on the Elgin before but I just can't pinpoint where...also, any leads on correct parts are always appreciated! I love trades too :D

I think the chrome guard could be period, and may actually be correct; I couldn't tell you who made it or what manufacturers used them on bikes (if any did). It could also be a generic replacement, somewhat like a Wald. Some bikes may have come stock with it, I'm just not certain.

I think the other is a Shelby guard, but that's a guess, so hopefully someone else will know for certain.

Any chance this would be right for the Elgin?

I was actually told that these Redbirds did not come with a chainguard of any sort. Every picture of one I've seen has been lacking one as well. I got a chance to see a catalog at Memory Lane classics but failed to take note of this detail; anybody know for sure?

Where in cleveland did you find that roadmaster?!

Also, what custom shop guy are we talking about?

Im starting to get a few nice cleveland welding bikes

I actually picked up the Elgin, CWC, and Schwinn from the same guy. He's planning on moving back to California since the building he's renting leaked all over his shop and his landlord refused repairs on it. I forgot his name but he was an awesome guy; said he frequently took trips with the Roadmaster down to the beach for the past 3 years. It was right around Detroit Ave and 78th, though these were the only bikes he had at the time but he had anything and everything laying around the shop.

Ya thats why i was asking, none of the bikes in the pictures I have seen had them either. But I'm pretty sure it is a Elgin chain gaurd.
