Ok I sprayed the sissy bar & fork crowns with Antique Pewter that came out pretty good. However it is not dark enough for my needs. I was hoping for more contrast.....

If this had worked out I would have done the rims to match. Unfortunately it is waaaaay to bright. Time to strip it & will just use bedliner on these parts & rims.

That will leave the tank & chain guard left to paint. I mounted an NOS Schwinn guard in Lime green as it was a pretty close color match to the frame & only needed a couple holes drilled to mount. I used it temporarily & is my choice so far. I was able to get to a couple handfuls of chain guards to try out in case I have something I like better.

The handlebar is painted. Will probably polish the grip area a bit more to add more pop to the green glitter grips.

Perfect!Exactly the reaction I hoped to hear when finished & one of the inspirations for this bike as an ode to the Mongoose mascot, Maurice! Thank you for posting this as it goes through my head a lot while working on the bike!

I've been plugging away this past week applying finish to parts for this build in my spare moments. Of course I had to pick the coldest week of the year in Colorado to do this. Stripped the sissy bar & fork crowns of the hammertone finish that didn't work out by hand. That stuff is pretty tough & hadn't fully cured. Wish I had a can of Klean Strip instead. Would have saved some time & just realized late last night that March 1 is Tuesday. I have been thinking it was Wednesday...... Time to get this thing together while finishing the last bit of paint. Got the tank painted green & matte clear coated. Just need to do the black accents & paint the chain guard.

Decided to paint both rims to match instead of matching the front with the light gray rear. I also painted the fork ends green to reveal the diamond cutout in the fork ends after I apply a carbon wrap on the fork legs.

Tank in silver...

Tank in green. Fork is on the left & pretty spot on for color match from the paint shop. Was cleared this morning & placed in the hot box to cure.

How about a big fat inner tube just for fun?

Apparently I needed more problem solving for this one. I did the best I could with what I had & think it will be fine. Still a little more paint to do, solve issues I had getting the fork together after the carbon fiber vinyl wrap I did on the legs. Hope to have it on wheels, at least, today.....

Got the tank finished between fighting the fork installation. Thanks to @Palepainter for masking the tank for me. It probably save me a day of taping, cursing & throwing stuff. The fork install was confusing, time consuming & more aggravating than it should have been considering I rode the bike around a couple of times before breaking down for finish application.

I was able to make a little progress in assembly and got the chainguard painted as well. Will add graphics tomorrow. Here's a sneak peek of where I called it a day.

Thanks Mike! I held a tank medallion up to the tank. It will be a scramble to finish. Next big task is taking the black spokes & chrome nipples from the original fat front wheel and using them on this front wheel. Should be fun! Looks like another long day tomorrow after work appointment.

That black is a really deep black ! Rustoleum Bedliner you say? Hmmmm...OJ needs to add that to his list of rattle can favs!

Does the thickness of the coating affect the fit / assembly of the parts at all?

The Rustoleum bedliner isn't as thick as some. No real issues with buildup. The vinyl mask used on the fork legs was thicker than what I am used to working with and was a bit of a problem.

It was a last minute dash & flurry of activity to get this finished in time for posting in the Finished thread. Now that I got some things done that were set aside to have every minute available to finish the bike I want to add some highlights of the finish.

One of the challenges for this build was how to attach the tank to the top tube. I could have drilled holes to use a bolt at front & rear of the tank as intended but didn't want holes in the top tube showing. There is also about 1/4" gap between the tunnel in the tank & top tube.

Since I was using various head badges as tank & fork medallions I wanted the strongest 2 sided tape I could get my hands on. Really thick(1/4") tape wasn't an option. Thought about 2" wide Velcro for the tank but just decided to build up a few areas with Scotch Extreme Duty Indoor/outdoor double side tape. 5 layers was perfect!

The problem with this is the tape sticks to anything it touches and doesn't let go without damage. Since the tape will fill the gap firmly half way around the top tube, how to set the tank straight & evenly bottomed out could rely on luck. Not at this stage of the build & time left. So I peeled each strip back and folded over on one side. Then took backing from building up layers to do the other side making tabs.

This acted as a lubricant to position the tank properly to keep it straight while firmly setting the top. Then I pulled the tabs on the sides for a firm mounting. I was unsure of how strong this would be but it would take a catastrophic event or intentionality(with a baseball bat?) to remove.



I'd like to send a Special Thanks to @Palepainter for help with the tank on this bike by shooting with primer and masking for paint! He made the chain guard graphic as well. And who can forget the renderings of paint scheme he did that made me switch the color scheme I had in mind.Also thank you for your advice, wisdom, humor encouragement and friendship. I look forward to getting together soon for a BuildOff Bike Ride! He provided helpful feedback in the final minutes of the build as well trying to figure do-dad positioning.

I also wanted to add a few finished photos. I wish I had more time during the final stages of this build but came down to the wire. I finished about 3:10pm, had to clean up a bit, put on clean clothes, get some pics & posted in the Finished thread by 5:00pm MST. It was a mad scramble at the end but made it with 6 minutes to spare!

Thank you to all for checking out my build as an ode to Mongoose Bicycles mascot, Maurice! My intent for this bike is for it to look as though it came from Mongoose like this (&use up some parts laying around the garage). I am pretty pleased with it and hope you enjoy it as well!!S

Thanks again Mike! I'm really digging it so far. I will be upgrading the crank and adding a bigger chainring. This gearing is ok for general cruising but 2-4 teeth would be better. It was fine with the stock tires that were 29 3/4" tall. The Black Floyd is almost an inch smaller.

Plus, green means GO!
