Dang nuts!!!!

I was doing final assembly on Sheryl's 60's Murray Jetfire this morning. The wheel set and whitewall tires I'm using came off of a nice Huffy Cranbrook I found on CL. When I got the wheels on the frame and started to put the nuts on the axles, some of the nuts seemed like the threads were boggered up. I didn't remember doing anything to screw them up, but stranger things.... Decided to go to the local Ace Hardware, but couldn't match up to anything they had. Went to LBS and paid thru the nose for 4 new nuts to match the "good" one I brought with me. Got back and had the same problem. Finally figured out that the front axle and back axle, although the same size have a different thread pitch. And they were off the same bike! All the nuts were OK, just mixed up. Wasted an hour and a half of cool morning temps figuring this out. Hot as hades out there now, but the bike is finished. Photos soon.

i had a nut problem once hahaha i always have to take my bikes apart to travel somewhere to ride usually always putting the front axle nuts into my pocket ( sounds dirty i know) so this one time i had my 49 schwinn in the car usually always have a bicycle in my car for the spur of the moment rides, drove to a nice flat town my friend lived at.. got the bike out put the front fender back on put the front wheel into place .. got the wrench ready checked my pockets ... no nuts i forgot to put them in my pocket this time ugh!! i was already 40 mins from home .. so i chained my bicycle to my buddys busa .. took my front wheel to the local hardwear store and found some nuts to fit the axle .. from then on when i take a wheel off the first thing i do is put the nuts back on the axles !

I have a magical parts drawer in the garage. Does not matter if I am looking for front or rear nuts, the drawer is full of the other.
I have a toolbox like that...need a 9/16", find the 1/2". Need the 1/2" find the 9/16". :?

hotrodjen, that's the nice thing about the old US bikes, a lot of the fasteners were US SAE, and the hardware stores all have that stuff. The ACE store I went to carries metric, but in 1 mm increments. They had 9mm and 10mm. Turns out these are 9 1/2mm ----!! $1.50 each at the LBS that is close by.

BTW: the bike I am building is almost identical to your build off bike. You inspired me to try some two tone masking tape painting. Didn't come out quite as good as yours, but the wife is real happy with it. I wish I could pinstripe the edges like you do. Pictures soon.
