I'll post a progress report soon. I made the battery pack and it is indeed brighter. I left it on for 4 hours and got tired of waiting for the light to dim. It gets warm but not excessively so. Batteries stay cool. I have purchased a suitable vintage tail light, an old Miller dynamo from England. That will get the LED treatment next.
