i made this work stand today.
gotta work on the clasp a bit more, but its great.
really simple to make. took me about an hour.

once i got it together i figured i would get the racer frame out and start taking paint off.
i used some stripper, then a big wire brush, and that got most of the red paint off, but none of the primer underneath.
i tried it one more time, and that loosened up the primer a bit, but not much.
then i got the side grinder out with the wire brush attachment.
an hour later and i have gotten most of it off but not in al the crevices.
i am thinking i will just take stuff like this to the sandblaster from now on.
$10 - 20 per frame is worth it to me. blah.

Something I found that works good for the small bits of paint in tight spots is an old knife. your rake the edge of the blade over the paint it will take it off.

Stand looks pretty cool is that 1 inch pipe on there? Is that pvc for the clamp? I think i might steal your idea

i used 1 1/4" pipe.

1- 48" galv pipe
1- 18" galv pipe
1- 90 degree elbow
1- flange
1- pvc T joint
2- 1" hinges
1- draw catch
2- 16"x24" 3/4" plywood
1 1/4" screws
8 size 1/2" long bolts/nuts
3/4" foam pipe insulation

get your 2 pieces of plywood, wood glue or construction adhesive them together to make a 1 1/2" thick base.
send some 1 1/4" screws through the perimeter to reinforce.

screw your flange to one end of the base, centered, with 1 1/4" screws.
screw in your 48" pipe to the flange.
screw the 90 elbow to the 48" pipe
screw the 18" pipe to the elbow.
thats the stand in a nutshell. the easiest part.

now, the clamp.

cut the top of the pvc T in half. i used a mitre saw. a ban saw would work, or a good old fashion hand saw. try to make it straight.
line up your hinges and drill holes for the 8 by 1/2"ers. attach the hinges. you want to keep the head side of the bolt inside the pipe.
you dont want the ends of them scratching your frame.

then line up the clasp and drill your holes. it may take some adjusting, as these were made for flat, not curved surfaces.

make sure you use the pipe insulation inside the clamp.

materials cost me about $50 including the wood.

let me know if youguys have any more questions.

Good job on the stand, I'm still playing with mine. I think the clamp is the hardest part to make.

As for stripping a frame, try to get it soda blasted. Baking soda will leave a smooth finish on the bare metal, where as sand can leave little pits. I got a quote of $25.00 to soda blast my 24" Columbia frame , fork, and chainguard.

I'm going to begin building a wheel truing stand eventually... great idea for the frame stand.
