Like a lot of folks on here, I like to pick up a cheap vintage bike, clean it up and flip it for a few bucks that then fees the habit. Over the last several months I've not sold a thing. I've got no shows, low ballers and scammers and little else. I've got what I believe is an old (60's) Phillips ladies single speed rebadged for Western Auto that looks like an early spaceliner. I've also got a nice Sears ladies single speed spacerliner style bike. Both are in good shape, stylish and usually would sell fast to the hippy market going mom or the college cruiser girl. But not lately.

So my new plan is to give em away. Yep, clean them up, get tires and tubes on them, grease and polish them up til they shine and give them away to the local bike coop that helps underpriviliged kids get bikes. They can sell them to th hippy market mom or the college cruiser girl and use the money to keep doing what they do for the community. Or give them away to someone who will appreciate and need them.

I think the net result is better than me holding out for $60 or $70 bucks for each of these bikes. I'm going to encourage everyone to take a good look at their collection and see if they might feel better about giving away a bike that few want to buy but many would appreciate having. It's worth considering especially at this time of the year.

I think that's a good idea. The only reason people were able to sell bikes like that was because of the "bubble" economy and all the "fake" money floating around. Those days are gone. People can't spend money on non necessities.

One of our local LBS is collecting bikes for Toys for Tots. I took 5 kids bikes that I had sitting around. They had a bunch of older cruisers that had been donated. A buddy bought one from them in good shape for $10 that will be donated to the Toys for Tots campaign.

I donate bides to our bike coop that are harder to sell or that would be something they can sell easily.
