As some of you know, I had a Sears Screamer 2 when I was a kid. For over five years now I've been talking about building an adult sized version and I even picked up a rusty and crusty Screamer to cut up for that purpose a few years ago.

I've been admiring the scaled up and scaled down builds of @pvwacko lately. On one of my trips down to see Paul at Wacko's Garage, I shared with him my idea of building an adult sized Screamer. He really liked the idea, so about a month ago our schedules aligned and I went back down to his house to do some brainstorming and I took some of my rusty Screamer parts to use or serve as reference. More to come from this collaboration build soon.

As a fellow former Screamer rider, I've been anticipating this build for quite a while. You better believe I'll be following the progress.
 
My original thoughts were that I would get someone to chop and section the crusty Screamer to make it adult sized. Here are the parts that I planned to use and had been collecting.

I ratted seatpan still had enough meat to act as a template. These Screamer seats were fairly unique in the shape of their rear end.

With the thought of "go big or go home", I had collected a 26x4 Beast wheel, a 26x4 Surly Black Floyd tire, and a 100mm Sturmey Archer 3 speed hub.

As Paul and I started brainstorming online, I played around with tire ratios. The Screamers had 20 rear and 16 front.

Here is 26 rear and 24 front (which I felt was too big up front)

Once I decided on 20 for the front I remembered that I had this cool 20" drum brake front wheel that I had gotten from Paul about a month or so before. I also had this 26" Spaceliner rat trap fork that I got in a trade with @Dr. Tankenstein

I am really liking this build. I agree with the wheel size choices. This is going to be very cool.

Paul has a cool trick that he uses to scale up or scale down builds. He decides on the rear wheel size, then he has his print shop print out a picture of the bike scaled to that wheel/tire height.

When I drove down to Paul's over a month ago for our brainstorming session, he had already printed a Screamer that was scaled to the rear wheel height of the 26x4 Black Floyd. Once we leaned the Black Floyd fatty against the drawing and stood next to it all, we both realized that the scale was a little too cartoonish for a comfortable ride.

Paul had a 24x3 tire, so we tried that next to the drawing and sat back with a drink and noodled on the dimensions and ratios.

Once we worked out the new numbers and did the visual gut checks, we knew we had the right plan for 24x3 rear and 20 up front. We also worked out some ideas for the unique Screamer nanner, chainguard, and rat trap springer fork.

Also during the bike road trip I took down to Jacksonville, I picked up the one owner 55 Huffy Customliner and the very special first build of Adam @karfer67 . It was probably one of the coolest bike trips I have ever taken (almost as cool as riding with the Custom Brigade through Paris in the middle of the night for 4 hours).

Adam had no idea that I was getting his old build "the HIGGINS" and naturally thought I was about to sell it when he saw me post it up online. Well, unlike most of my purchases, I didn't get the HIGGINS for profit. My plans all along were to work out a deal to finally get the bike back to it's father. I knew that I wanted Adam to be the one to make me a set of adult scaled Screamer Butterfly apes, so we easily agreed on a cash/trade deal that got me two sets of his bars and got him his baby back home. Stayed tuned down the road for some Patina Kustoms handlebars on NANNER PUDDIN once we figure out the scale that I need. Everyone comes out a winner is this bike story!
 
Once we decided on the 24x3 rear wheel, I knew just the wheel that I wanted to use. I still have this 80mm wide three speed wheel from the PHAT XC03 that was part of what I traded Fugsley for. We'll be able to use this without needing a wide BB too. The tire has a nice distinct edge to that mimics a muscle bike slick. A few weeks later when the Pink Rat Fink deal popped up on the JAX craigslist, I dropped the wheel and the Spaceliner rat trap springer by Paul's.

So after Paul got the 24" scaled print, he started the frame 10 days ago.

That was a fun day because he posted up pics on Facebook throughout the day, so even though I was on a San Francisco biz trip, I still had the excitement of watching it come to life.

Followed by the main tubes getting laid out and mitered before welding them up on the welding table (with the drawing underneath) and trying not to burn the paper.

20" rat trap springer don't really exist (only 20" wheels on 24" springers). So I'm getting Paul to shorten a 26" Spaceliner rat trap springer fork that I got in a trade with @Dr. Tankenstein

First he mocked it up on the scaled picture to judge how much it needs to be shortened.

Then cut the main legs off just below the crown

Now is where cool stuff happens. Rather than just shortening the forks and welding them back on, he is going to reassemble the shortened legs back into the crown. To do this he used some carbide burrs and chewed out the old fork leg material from the inside of the crown. Tedious but ingenious work.

Seeing this work progress and especially seeing this picture once again assured me how lucky I was to get Paul to build this frame for me.

The open fork legs will be covered with the stock chrome trim that goes under the crown race. Lowers will be brazed for a factory look. Now I'll have a custom fork that looks stock! Now that's craftsmanship!

You've got a professional doing the job, I'm sure you'll be fine.

Welded up forks should be plenty strong. I just like the level of detail Paul is putting into the fork. I think he did a fork similar to this for one of the bikes he built for @spinman . It's such an ingenious idea.

I think the Screamer 1's had 20" rat traps.
