need advice on this schwinn

heres the facts.
-missing chaingaurd
-missing tank
-missing parts of the 2spd shift set up
- new departure 2spd model DD rear hub
- searial # D22322(under the BB)
-i paid way more than i wanted to for this bike.

here's my thoughts.
-it's to far gone to restore(to many missing parts/not cost effective)
-it's to nice to parts out
-it's to original to customize

here's my questions
-what can this bike be? 1948 i guess. # is earlier than the known listings
-what to do w/ it????
i guess what i'm lookin' for for a responce is"those things are a dime a dozen, have fun customizing it"
or " dont touch it, those are gettin harder to find"

I'll go with #2 and say, " have fun customizing it! " thats what I'd do.. :lol:

seriously tho, it could be some rare model... (I have noo idea) so make sure to get a positive ID on it before you take the hack saw to it.. :roll:

i would clean it up and ride it showing its age.. very cool bike

Headlight Lens........... $12
Decent tires.............. $30
Reflector for Rack....... $6
Correct Chain Guard.....$20-$30

Add some lube and some love, it'd be a FINE looking bike!

Then sell the rusty, incomplete 2-speed parts and hub on Ebay to the rabid, insane collectors for 4 times the money it took to make the bike pretty again.

I'm pretty sure that's a schwinn hornet.. Sweet ride! I'd just clean it up nice. New seat, chaingaurd and rear hub, tires and ride it. Nice bike! I really like the paint on the hornets! Kinda hard to replicate now days. Just looks vintage as ever! Awesome

I would take it apart and clean up each part, then wax each part twice and put it back together and ride it.

What is that clamp looking thing on the top tube?

When you pull the cranks to clean and lube them, check for a date stamp.

i pulled the crank. no year. AS&CO
believe me i did a bunch of research 3 days before i picked this bike up.
i'll probably cutomize it,cause that's what i do
i was hopin that someone would stop me before i made that move just in case :lol:

Your D serial number could be 1947. We've dated my wife's bike to an early '47 with a C1 serial number. It seems to follow the series from just before the 1948 fire.

I think you'll be looking for the "feather" chainguard. Looks like a great starting point. I agree with the others, since it's in original paint. Do the tubes and tires, find a guard.

It's a great old bike and the skiptooth drivetrain looks like it's in good shape. The 2-speed is your call, whether to fix it or swap its priceless guts out.

Awesome headbadge... that alone makes me want to fix it up.

Your bike is a post war Schwinn DX. Probably a model D97X. Here's a pic of one just like it, except it has the wrong rack. (yours has the correct rack) You can see what chainguard and tank you need.
Tailwinds is exactly right. I would take what's left of the 2-speed ND hub off and sell it on ebay. Good bucks for those. Fix it up with another hub of your choice. You can get a repop tank from Maple Island for $125.

I restored a prewar DX that looked about like yours. Not cost effective? Maybe not, but look what I ended up with. :wink: Gary
