IMG_4923-1.jpg

it seems i've been all over gods green earth today without any luck.(i'm sure 1/2 the problem is i'm not sure what size i'm looking for)

theres no threads just a hollow tube. 1 9/16" inner diameter. the bearing cups just press in on both sides.
is this the same size bb as the old schwinn's. what exactly am i looking for?
any help would be greatly appreciate. (links are good also)

if ya need more info, just ask. thx.

I don't have measurements right now, but what part looks shot on the old cranks? You could try new crank arms from somebody who was parting out a 3 speed.

1 piece crank holes are 2". I guess my post on your build thread about the crank was pointless because I have never seen what you describe. How about some pics of the crank assembly, esp.left side?

its the main spindle thats shot. the steel has worn away and the pins will pass right through the crank arms. (even new pin's) bearings are shot as well as the rest of the parts (crank arms are fine)

heres an exploded view of what i need. (to fit a 1 9/16" id bb)

alot of those old 3 speed cranks (raleigh, ccm etc)thread into one side of the bb(one side being static)

i found a few of em today, but this ones considerably differen't (cups on both sides-no threads)

i tried an old 43mm bb (common here in canada) same set up, and its way too big. i've been told 3 times today to just cut it out and weld in a new one, but i figure you guys wouldn't let me down. :)

inner diameter is 1 & 9/16"(thats what the cups fit into) easy to find in the larger sizes but this is a tiny bb.

i was told its american, and its old. :)
serial number on the bb is 21 2502

Weird. Maybe spot a standard 3-piece hanger inside the existing tube? Beyond that I have no clue. Maybe some one else knows. Good hunting.

I had a Chinese bike the had an oddball size like that. I ended up buying a threaded bb shell for about 10 bucks from a local framebuilder. They are 1-1/2" OD so I sleeved it with a piece of muffler tubing. I had to a little sanding to get it to fit in there but I think some heat would have done the trick. After the whole she-bang was in the frame I drilled two holes in the bottom, tapped them, and secured it with two short bolts. Then I used a standard threaded bottom bracket and 3-piece cranks.

You might want to find out the OD of "mid" and "Spanish" bb's for BMX and see it either of them will fit.

that my friend is genius! if i cant find what i need, at least i have a plan of action. :)

Yo Leigh, think the stuff from an old supercycle 20 inch frame would work? I shot a few pics on my way out for a ride, but didnt have a measuring tape handy. Ssame basic set-up, press in bearing cups, threaded on 1 side of 3 piece crank, locking nut is different though, Take a look, lmk what you think.

if it's what i think it is, it originally used a #42 retainer, smaller than the common 64 & 66 on most one piece cranks. i had an old iver johnson frame that size. a stock, threaded bb shell for a frame using a regular three piece crank is a good slip fit and can be brazed in. i've seen a return to that size on some dime store kids bikes. i think it's j&b importers part number 21541, sold under the 'sunlite' brand (used to be 'pyramid' brand). what i don't know is if it uses the same one piece crank as most others or if it's a different diameter/thread. also there are some three piece conversions on bmx bikes now for what they call a 'mid' bottom bracket that looks to be that size as well. if you're near a haro shop, check out some of the '09 models to see these. i don't know if you could order one or if they're just oem for now.....

A Spanish bb is 34mm or 1.34" (about 1-11/32") . A Mid bb is 1-5/8".

If you have access to a lathe you could make some aluminum bearing cups to fit the Spanish bearings.

If you have access to a milling machine you could bore your frame's bb out to fit a Mid bb, it's only 1/32" on the radius.

Also sealed American bb's use the same size bearing as a Mid bb, so you could get a cheapo sealed American bb with a square taper spindle and just use any road crank.

I bet if you looked in a bearing catalog you could find a sealed bearing with a 1-9/16" OD and a 3/4" (19mm) ID (BMX spindles are mostly 19mm or 22mm) and hodge-podge this whole thing together inexpensively.

thx guys for getting me to think like i should be thinking and not how i thought i was think'n.
turns out i had the solution in my basement this entire time.
i knew this would come in handy when i pulled it out of the trash. i just had no idea it would be such a vital part of this build.

thanks for all your help. as soon as the sun comes up, i'll pull out the angle grinder and finish the job.

victory is mine!

it took some grinding and cutting and heating and beating and repainting (man i love flat black paint for touch up's) but in the end, it all worked out for the best.
